Hall of Famer and Chicago Bears legend Gale Sayers has died. He was 77.
Born May 30 1943, in Wichita Kansas, Sayers played college football at the University of Kansas, amassing 4,020 all purpose yards in three seasons. He was a two time consensus All American while playing for the Jayhawks.
Drafted 4th overall by the Bears in the 1965 draft, Sayers set a league record by scoring 22 touchdowns, including a record-tying six in one game, and gained 2,272 all-purpose yards en route to being named the NFL’s Rookie of the Year.
In his injury shortened career, Sayers recorded 4,956 rushing yards, 39 rushing touchdowns, 3,172 kick return yards and 8 return touchdowns. He had 4 Pro Bowl appearances and was voted an All Pro 5 times.
He was inducted into the football hall of fame in 1977 at age 34.
