California Governor Gavin Newsom has just issued a 10pm curfew for all areas of the state within the “purple” zone. The curfew will go into effect on Saturday and apply from 10pm to 5am for the next month.
“The virus is spreading at a pace we haven’t seen since the start of this pandemic and the next several days and weeks will be critical to stop the surge. We are sounding the alarm,” said Governor Newsom in a statement. “It is crucial that we act to decrease transmission and slow hospitalizations before the death count surges. We’ve done it before and we must do it again.”
About 94% of the state’s population of 40 million reside in purple-tier counties. The curfew would apply to “non-essential work” and “gatherings”
