The View from Here

Today’s featured image is of sunset over lake Ontario taken from Fort Ontario, on the east side of the Oswego NY harbor. Fort Ontario was one of several forts erected by the British to protect the area around the east end of Lake Ontario. The original Fort Ontario was erected in 1755, during the French and Indian War in order to bolster defenses already in place at Fort Oswego on the opposite side of the river.

We start today’s View with a quick election update. There have been no major changes since yesterday, but a few things of note have happened.

First, out of Arizona, the news is encouraging. The uncounted ballots there seem to be breaking for Trump at about a 58% clip. That put him in line to win that state if that ratio stays true.

Philadelphia lost a court battle to try to prevent republican poll watchers from monitoring the count. However at last check, they were still not allowing the watchers in to the counting areas. Stay tuned for more on that.

North Carolina will not be announcing any more totals until the 12th. That’s pursuant to a court order from a US district court judge, but I believe they have to segregate any ballots received after the regular deadline.

The Trump campaign has filed a suit in Nevada to prevent that state’s election officials from counting illegal ballots. Apparently that’s been something that has garnered some attention, and the blame is being placed on Whorehouse Harry Reid.

The Senate looks like it’s going to break safely for the Republicans. The way I see it shaking out, even without the runoff in the georgia special election, the R’s are going to have 51 seats and Cocaine Mitch will stay majority leader.

Nancy Pelosi may be in trouble in the House. Not only wasn’t there a blue wave, the Dems are on track to lose at least 12 seats and there a distinct, if unlikely, possibility that the Republicans can take the house. Even without taking the House outright, the gains will effectively neuter Nancy’s abilities to push her agenda. There’s even serious talk from the Dems about removing her from the Speakership.

In some less consequential, but still important election news, a pair of ballot initiatives in California were up for votes on Tuesday. Prop 22, which basically rolled back the parts of the disastrous AB5, the law that forced contract workers and gig workers onto company payrolls, that effected Uber, LYFT and their associated food delivery services. Some of the restrictions remain, but the proposition keeps those companies, and the jobs they created in california. Prop 16 however went down in flames. That proposition would have allowed gender, race and sexual preference based quotas in hiring and school admissions.

Judge Peter Cahill rejected severance and change of venue motions from the 4 cops accused of killing George Floyd. For now, the all 4 will be tried together in Hennipin county. Cahill also ruled the names of jurors will be kept confidential. The jury will also be partially sequestered during trial and fully sequestered during deliberations.

Richard Szala, from Clearwater, was arrested today after issuing threats to kill Trump supporters and at least 7 Republican politicians including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Sen. Rick Scott (Fla.), and Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Nice looking fellow. . . .

There were riots in Portland again last night. AntiFa staged a “night of terror” but this time there was a different outcome. Instead of being allowed to run wild, they were met by the Oregon National Guard. After 6 months of this crap, governor Kate Brown finally had enough. Call me cynical, but could it have anything to do with her thinking Joe is going to win?
