750 Million Genetically Engineered Mosquitoes Are Set To Be Released In Florida Keys
So here’s the plan
The pilot project could come into effect as early as 2021 after being given the go-ahead by the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) in August, as well as receiving approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) earlier this year.
The plan is to release millions of male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (which don’t bite) that have been genetically-tweaked to express a protein called tTa. Once the introduced males mate with wild female mosquitoes, the protein will be passed on and effectively kill their female offspring, thereby reducing the population of the mosquitos in the area.
It’s the first time such a project has been approved in the US. However, the plan has raised a fair amount of controversy, with some critics calling it a “Jurassic Park experiment.”
Let’s be honest here
Do you believe one Goshdamn word that the CDC spews about anything!!?.
that’s a big hell no
Just because it snows from October to April around here
doesn’t mean there isn’t an advantage
the snow keeps the Gallinipper at bay
I’ll share some insight to these bastards
the Gallinipper or Psorophora ciliata. These new mosquitoes can reach the size of a small wasp and their bite packs a wallop. They can even bite through canvas!
“They’re biting through cotton canvas shorts,” Clark said. “We’ve never seen a mosquito go through something like that.”
The bites are “like a stab,” Clark said. “Not as bad as a yellow jacket but you know when one of ’ems got you. It’s much worse than a regular mosquito bite.”
Gallinipper larvae are reported to eat the larvae of both Ae. vexans and Ae. trivittatus. So, one might consider them a beneficial insect, but their presence is a mixed blessed at best because the females are persistent and painful biters, attacking any time during day when their haunts are invaded. Their mouthparts feel like telephone poles being shoved into your skin when they bite.
Now this may considered a tad racisssss
NOT OF MY DOING
if you are operating after the Gillinipper has moved on brace yourself for the
Asian tiger mosquito
Asian tiger mosquitoes have been known to carry viruses such as dengue,
chikungunya and Zika to people
these mosquitoes are widespread from tropical to temperate regions of the globe, including many parts of the U.S.
Fun times man
