At 0841 EDT, 1711 local time, a suicide bomber detonated himself just outside the Abbey gate at Hamid Karzai international airport in Kabul. A second bomb is reported to have been detonated not far away at the Baron hotel. That hotel housed many British citizens awaiting transportation.
Early reports indicate at least 4 US service members have been injured in the blast, and dozens of those waiting outside the gates have been killed, including several “foreign nationals” (read non-afghanis).
The blast follows a state department warning to leave the area around the Abbey gate yesterday.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become known.
