The family of Alwyn Cashe will receive his Medal of Honor at a ceremony at the White House today. Also receiving the Medal today are Sergeant First Class Christopher A. Celiz (posthumously) and Master Sergeant Earl D. Plumlee.
Cashe was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions on 17 October 2005. Despite suffering second and third-degree burns over 72% of his body, saved the lives of six of his fellow soldiers after the Bradley fighting vehicle they were riding in struck an improvised explosive device. Cashe succumbed to his injuries on November 8, 2005 at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was survived by his wife and children. Cashe is interred at Restlawn Cemetery in Sanford, Florida.
