A little while ago, I wrote about my observations on the gun and ammo issue from my perspective as someone who sells them for a living. This post is a continuation with updated information.
Ammo supply seems to be loosening up some. And there’s some very good news on the ammo production front, but first some history.
Last June, Big Green declared bankruptcy. This came on the heels of several months of WuFlu related closures. Just before the bankruptcy filing, the company fired all the employees at the Lonoke Arkansas ammo plant. All of Remington’s ammo had been produced there since the closure of the Bridgeport CT plant in the mid 1980’s.
Vista Outdoors Group, the parent company of Federal, Speer, CCI and a couple of other smaller ammo producers, bought the Remington ammo name and facility during the bankruptcy auction. About 2 months ago, Vista restarted production at the Lonoke facility. They have already started shipping new production ammunition.
Why .35 Rem? Beats me, but I’m glad to see any new Remington ammo. They produced 15% to 20% of the domestic ammo in this country.
The new owners of the firearms part of Remington had announced they were reopening the Ilion NY factory, the historic home of Remington since Eliphalet Remington, on 1 March. That did not happen. The United Mine Workers took umbrage at the new owner’s reopening plans. I will keep an eye on that situation, seeing as Ilion is only about an hour from me.
While we’re on the subject of the Remington bankruptcy and subsequent parting-out, Marlin had been aquired by Remington in 2017. As part of the asset sale, Sturm, Ruger inc. bought Marlin. I don’t have any word about whether they have restarted production at the Madison NC plant, but anecdotally, I haven’t seen a new Marlin of any kind since last spring.
NICS checks havent slowed much. February was down from the 4.3 million checks in January, with 3.4 million background checks run. That is up about 600,000 from the previous year. March however set yet another new record at 4.69 million checks. That’s just shy of a million more checks than March 2020.
We are three months into 2021 and there have been more checks run than there were in each of the first 10 years of NICS checks.
Before you get carried away, there isn’t a one to one correlation between checks and firearms sold. A good percentage are run for other purposes than firearms purchases like pistol permit applications and recertifications, some people change their minds, and then there are the delay/denies. The NSSF figures a bit more than half are for actual purchases. Even that half is somewhat misleading, as you can put multiple firearms on a single 4473.
There’s one among us who probably sits in the mister bubbles watching his sailboats while thinkin he a landlover with a bad case of cabin fever if he doesn’t get out on the water soon he’ll shrivel up & die from

I know stuff
what you see there swabby is
she was built in 1965 at the Seafarer Company on Long Island
Hull number #2
was about the time they were switching from wood to fiberglass
thinking antiques should stick together << some extra stuff there
She’s very heavy at 8 tons, she also super strong becised her many sails
she sports Westerbreke 35 Hp diesel engine
At one time she was on land for 3 years in pretty ruff shape
the Manana’s home port was in Escanaba
while Bingham Boat works out of MQT went to work striped down to her Hull
hand sanded and completely refitted
Now for some paticulars
Professionally restored, to better than when she was brand new, by Venette Boat Works in Escanaba, Michigan. This classic is Hull #2, built by Seafarer Sailboats, in 1965 and labeled a Buccaneer model, reported to be a Philip Rhodes design for Seafarer Sailboats, overseas in Holland where these models were built of wood. With fiberglass coming into the boat building market, Seafarer opened a new boat building yard on Long Island, NY, for building in this new medium. Using the wood design, they maintained the same hull thickness of about 1 – 1/4″ by laying up matted glass and offered custom interiors and full height cabins if desired. This boat got it all.
Powered by a four cylinder Westerbeke Diesel engine, model 4-107 rated at 40 HP. She is a perfect Great Lakes boat, in the waters where she has always been. First custom built for a Canadian in Little Current, Ontario, she then spent about ten seasons at the St. Joseph, MI Yacht Club, before we acquired her and sailed her to our slip at the Escanaba Harbor and the Escanaba Yacht Club. Since the massive refit, she has spent her out of the water periods, with protected indoor storage, at Vinette Boat Works.
Now as the captain looks squarely into the mirror at his 76 birthday, he finds that he is fully considering boating retirement and accepting the rank of Landlubber Admiral and a comfortable chair for EYC functions.
These first thoughts of being beached, first surfaced in the summer of 2014, and the boat was listed with Center Pointe Yacht Services, of Door County / Milwaukee / Kenosha and was listed for $59,500 and at the time offers remained at low-tide. To raise the bar and to get this great yacht sailing again, it has been decided to offer this fine lady direct for just $29,900, however reasonable offers will be considered from a worthy sailor. A sailor who knows there are only two types of sailors; one that has run aground, and the other, that will.
In a statement, offered by Dan Branson, owner of Vinette Boatworks, after the extensive rework and upgrades including; a new teak interior, new wiring throughout, total new Awl Grip paint, new chain plates and plumbing . . . “This boat has been completely restored and we have found similar boats on the market for about $75,000.”
As we know BLIGH was a mean bastard
not as mean as I can be
that was something I was reading on
“8/14/17,
Seafarer 36, 1965, Escanaba Harbor, Michigan, $29,900, Ad expired”

Had to check my maple syrup making sure I have enough to use for the fish I’m thinking about smokin
don’t know you folks notice , I use maple syrup in many things or I’m mentioning it in some way
So here’s the story of Maple syrup
It’s told in each tribe a little different yet the basics remain the same
One day Winneboozhoo was standing under a maple tree. Suddenly it began to rain maple syrup (not sap) right on top of him. Winneboozhoo got a birch bark tray and held it out to catch the syrup. He said to himself
This is too easy for the People to have the syrup just rain down like this.”
So he threw the syrup away and decided that before they could have the syrup, the People would have to give a feast, offer tobacco, speak to the manido and put out some birch bark trays
Nokomis, the grandmother of Winneboozhoo, showed him how to insert a small piece of wood into each maple tree so the sap could run down into the vessels beneath. When Winneboozhoo tested it, it was thick and sweet. He told his grandmother it would never do to give the People the syrup without making them work for it. He climbed to the top of one of the maples, scattered rain over all the trees, dissolving the sugar as it flowed into the birch bark vessels.
“Now we have to cut wood, make vessels, collect the sap and boil it for a long time. If we want the maple syrup, we have to work for it.”
Right now if one drives around the air is full of the smell of maple from the sugar shacks
maple camps
as they were once called
some other stuff you may file under
thanks Chance I didn’t know that
Improves Heart Health
The health benefits of maple syrup also include giving you a healthier heart. It is one of the body’s organs that is susceptible to different kinds of diseases such as stroke, atherosclerosis, and other cardiovascular conditions. Maple syrup contains zinc and its consumption may protect and prevent various cardiovascular disorders Zinc also enhances the performance of the endothelial cells by protecting them against damage due to the existence of excess cholesterol in addition to other oxidized lipids. The blood vessels are comprised of different components of the endothelial cells, which form the inner lining of these vessels. A low level of zinc exposes the linings to injuries, which in turn can affect the normal functioning of the heart.
Improves Male Reproductive Health
The consumption of maple syrup also helps in maintaining male reproductive health. There are certain minerals such as zinc, in maple syrup, that are useful for a healthy reproductive system, particularly the prostate gland.
Reduction in the level of minerals increases the risk of disorders. This is why it is advisable for men to always try to consume foods that contain the right amount of this mineral. Maple syrup is one such food that is easy to acquire, readily available, and enjoyable as well.
Strengthens Immune System
A lack of zinc and manganese minerals could easily lead to a reduction in the number of white blood cells, which affects the response of the immune system. Supplementing these minerals is the only way known to restore their levels to the proper state. Maple syrup is a good source of both zinc and manganese, which play a key role in strengthening the immune system.

Airport Workers Seize 185 Baby Galápagos Tortoises Wrapped in Plastic, Packed in Suitcase
Airport customs officials in Ecuador have intercepted a suitcase packed with 185 baby tortoises, en route from the Galápagos Islands to the mainland. Individually wrapped in plastic, the hatchlings were discovered during a routine baggage inspection on March 28.
Officials at Galápagos Ecological Airport on the island of Baltra estimated that the tortoises were less than 3 months old, reports the BBC. Sadly, 10 of them had died in transit.
Allegedly, Galápagos tortoise hatchlings can fetch around $5,000 per specimen from exotic pet collectors. Airport manager Jorge Rosillo claimed that certain species are “really sought after in the Asian market,” reports Sky News.
The suitcase, marked “souvenirs,” was turned in by a transport firm shuttle bound for the city of Guayaquil. Officials believe the smugglers packed the hatchlings tightly in plastic wrap so that no movement would be detected by airport baggage X-ray machines. Yet staffers were suspicious.
Airport officials shared the discovery on Facebook.
As a participant in an effort to combat wildlife trafficking internationally—The Buckingham Palace Declaration—Galápagos airport authorities “consistently train [their] staff and commit to notifying the relevant police authorities on shipments suspected of containing illegal wildlife and its products,” they stated.
Ecuador’s environment minister Marcelo Mata condemned the smuggling on Twitter as “crimes against wildlife and the natural heritage of Ecuadorians.”
Smuggling animals from the Galápagos carries a sentence of one to three years in prison. To date, nobody has been arrested in connection to the 185 trafficked tortoises, but members of the transport firm were held for questioning. Police investigation is ongoing.
The 175 surviving hatchlings were placed in the care of Galápagos National Park.
Galápagos tortoises, the longest-lived of all vertebrates, with lifespans of over 100 years on average, are one of many species that are unique to these Pacific Ocean islands.
