Haven’t been on the iland since the late 60’s, if memory serves, when we did go, it was to the Naubinway to see cousins who fished Lake Michigan, or to attend funerals for those lost on that lake. In the fishing community, it isn’t so different then the mining community, everyone knows everyone and their families. Spending a few days on the iland, it’s NOT cheap by any means, the film Somewhere in time was filmed there
Met a woman tending flower beds, 68/70 years of age, lives just north of St. Ignace, takes a ferry every day to tend flower beds, she grew up on the iland just down the road from the Grand Hotel. Said she to old to ride snowmobiles, to visit family in the winter. Nice lady she was. Lots of Jamaicans come for summer work, thier knowledge of American history would put many Americans to shame, there’s a program , workers are put through, where only the Top people are chosen to work there.
