Today is the day that Donald J Trump will be certified as the 47th President of the United States.
A joint session of Congress will assemble today at 1300 to count and Certify the Electoral College votes. This process has happened every four years since 1789.
Security around the Capitol is tight. Additional security in the form of 4000 additional Secret Service agents, security fencing and other measures.
The weather may be a factor. The District is forecast to get between 8 and 12 inches of snow today. Speaker Johnson has said the certification will happen regardless.
While she has made a statement saying otherwise, there is a chance that Kamala Harris, who as VP is also the Senate President, might not show up to the session. If she shows, she becomes the third sitting VP to certify their election loss. Richard Nixon was the first in 1961 after losing to JFK and Al Gore was the second in 2001 after his loss to George Bush.
Hubert Humphrey would have had to certify Nixon’s victory in 1971, but he recused himself. Harris has that option, and if she takes it the President pro tempore of the Senate, Chuck Grassley will take her place.
For those interested, once a live stream of the events pops up, I will edit it into this post.
