Today’s musical selection comes from one of the bands this author was really into in his late teens, Fugazi. The post-hardcore band formed in Washington, D.C., in 1986. The band consists of guitarists and vocalists Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto, bassist Joe Lally, and drummer Brendan Canty. MacKaye chose the word “fugazi” (which means “false or inauthentic”) as the band name. It comes from Mark Baker’s Nam, a compilation of stories of Vietnam War veterans, in there being a slang backronym for “Fucked Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In [a body bag]”.
The band was adamant about being affordable to the fans. This editor saw the band several times, and never paid more than $10 fr a ticket. Their records were also cheap for the time. They were also a big part of the straight edge movement.
Today’s track, Waiting Room, comes from the band’s 1989 release 13 Songs. The full length LP combined remastered versions of the bands first two releases the EPs Fugazi and Margin Walker.
