- 1676 – Indian chief King Philip, also known as Metacom, is killed by English soldiers, ending the war between Indians and colonists.
- 1862 – Mistakenly believing the Confederate Army to be in retreat, Union General John Pope attacks, beginning the Battle of Groveton. Both sides sustain heavy casualties.
- 1879 – King Cetshwayo, the last great ruler of Zululand, is captured by the British following his defeat in the British-Zulu War.
- 1914 – Three German cruisers are sunk by ships of the Royal Navy in the Battle of Heligoland Bight, the first major naval battle of World War I.
- 1917 – President Woodrow Wilson is picketed by suffragists in front of the White House, who demand that he support an amendment to the Constitution that would guarantee women the right to vote.
- 1938 – The first degree given to a ventriloquist’s dummy is awarded to Charlie McCarthy–Edgar Bergen’s wooden partner. The honorary degree, “Master of Innuendo and Snappy Comeback,” is presented on radio by Ralph Dennis, the dean of the School of Speech at Northwestern University.

We start the news in Indiana where there is an update on a story I mentioned in the comments of yesterday’s RNN. It seems there is a 300ish pound lioness and her cub on the loose in Madison and/or Hancock counties, Northeast of Indianapolis. It is being reported that no zoo, sanctuary or other licensed facility in the region is missing a lion. The working hypothesis is that the lion – and her cub – were being kept illegally. Among the new details is the fact the lioness is wearing a blue collar of some type..
Madison County deputies, joined by Hancock County and state police, searched southern Madison and northern Hancock counties for four hours Thursday using drones and ground teams after a 10 a.m. sighting report.
Wild lions are human-shyfor the most part and will avoid conflict with humans unless food is involved. This lion however is very likely habituated to humans. I hope this does not end badly for the cats, but I fear the lioness will be killed at the very least.

In a story from the more of this please department, ICE has started targeting and detaining Haitian nationals residing in Springfield, Ohio, after the Department of Homeland Security terminated Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status following a Supreme Court decision in Mullin v Doe. Those affected must now leave or face deportation.
Right on cue, the lefties are losing their everloving minds. I see a lot of they entered legally as justification for them to stay. Well, the key word in TPS is temporary. Haitians have had the benefit of TPS for 16 years. Long enough.
Maybe we should ship them to Hancock county Indiana. . .
This one bugs me. It is not only a waste of time, effort and good-will, it is historically ignorant. I avoided covering this story because I sincerely hoped it was just a bit of trolling. Well, it was not.
President Trump signed an executive order yesterday requiring federal agencies to use Lake America when referring to Lake Ontario. The EO – despite what you may have read – did not rename the lake. It merely ordered executive Agencies to use the new ‘title’ in any new publications regarding the Lake.
Time for a bit of history and etymology. Y’all know I am a history type guy, and most of you know I grew up in Upstate NY really close to Lake Ontario. So, here is the straight poop on the name. The word comes from either the Huron /Wyandot/Tionontati word Ontarí:io (“great lake”) or the Iroquoian/Haudenosaunee word kanadario (“beautiful water” or “sparkling water”).
I personally lean towards the Wyandot rather than the Iroquois simply because there is a minor lake in the Finger Lakes named Canadarago that has direct linguistic lineage to Kanadario. Moreover, the French explorers that named most of the region had better relations with the Huron/Wyandot than with the Haudenosaunee.
What’s more, the Canadian province was named after the lake, not the other way around. In fact, prior to the 1867 Confederation Act, the province was called Upper Canada.
Anyway, unlike the Gulf of America/Mexico thing, this is dumb, counterproductive and mean spirited.
It appears the residents of Ceuta, the Spanish exclave in North Africa, are fed up with the (lack of) response from the Spanish Government. In the past 24 hours they have attacked the invaders, destroyed shanty towns, looted Red Cross aid stations and clashed with police. Protesters sat in roads to block Red Cross food and water deliveries, stormed sites like El Trampolín and Benítez, tore down tents, and burned belongings.
In a series of clashes last night, Spanish police used tear gas and fired rubber bullets at residents who were out protesting the lack of action by Pedro Sanchez’ Spanish Government. The Police did not use any of those methods on the Islamic invaders.
