• 1790 – The Revenue Cutter service, the parent service of the U.S. Coast Guard, is organized.
• 1873 – While protecting a railroad survey party in Montana, George Armstrong Custer and the 7th Cavalry clash for the first time with the local Lakota
• 1892 – Lizzie Borden took an axe, And gave her mother forty whacks; When she saw what she had done, She gave her father forty-one. Lizzie Borden’s parents are found dead. Lizzie is acquitted after a sensation trial.
• 1914 – Germany invades Belgium causing Great Britain to declare war on Germany.
• 1936 – Jesse Owens wins gold in the long jump at the Berlin Olympics. It was the 2nd of 4 Golds he would win.
• 1944 – Diarist Anne Frank was captured. The 15-year-old Jewish girl and her family had taken refuge in a walled off area of an Amsterdam warehouse in 1942 out of fear of deportation to a Nazi concentration camp. She would not survive.
• 1944 – RAF pilot T. D. Dean becomes the first pilot to destroy a V-1 buzz bomb when he tips the pilotless craft’s wing, sending it off course.
• 1952 – Helicopters from the U.S. Air Force Air Rescue Service land in Germany, completing the first transatlantic flight by helicopter in 51 hours and 55 minutes of flight time.
• 1964 – The U.S.S. Maddox and Turner Joy exchange fire with North Vietnamese patrol boats.
• 1964 – The bodies of civil rights activists James Chaney. Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were found in a shallow grave in an earthen dam near Philadelphia, Mississippi. The discobvery of the bodies led to a massive FBI investigation called ‘Mississippi Burning’.
• 1979 – President Jimmy Carter establishes the Energy Department.
• 1988 – The US Senate votes to give each Japanese-American who was interned during WWII $20,000 compensation and an apology.

We start the news in Florida where a small plane made an emergency landing on a road. Monday morning around 9:55 a.m., a Piper Cherokee Warrior from a Pensacola flight school made an emergency landing on eastbound I-10 near mile marker 14 after the pilot and flight student reported mechanical issues.

At one time your editor held a multi-engine instrument rating and flew quite regularly. The biggest fear for pilots is always mechanical issues, particularly with the powerplant. It’s almost guaranteed the student pilot needed a change of drawers.

Sticking in the aviation world, Ireland just took delivery of a new Dassault Falcon 6X late last year. It has just come out that because they refused delivery with any Israeli tech onboard, Dassault had to remove a key landing system called the FalconEye because it is manufactured by Elbit systems, an Israeli defense contractor. What does FalconEye do? It helps the pilot land in inclement weather like fog where visibility is limited.

So the new €53 million jet has limits on when and where it can land.

In yet more aviation related news, a Wisconsin man flew his helicopter to his local Cabelas. On Saturday evening, the man landed safely in the Richfield Cabela’s parking lot around 6 p.m., explaining to deputies that the road trip felt too long. He held a proper license and followed all FAA rules.

Better to ask forgiveness than ask permission. Also, 100% would.

As I noted in the on this date segment, today marks the founding of the Revenue Cutter Service. It also marks the birthday of the United States Coast Guard. For 236 years the Puddle Pirates have been standing watch over our coasts and beyond.

There are huge wildfires ravaging parts of the Pacific Northwest. An arrest was made in connection with the largest of three fires burning in the Spokane Washington area. Aaron F. Farinacci has been charged with first-degree arson and is a convicted felon with previous arrests in Arizona for manslaughter and attempted murder. It seems he killed his own father over dirty dishes.

We’ll find out that he is a commie or some shite in a couple of days.
