Sipping coffee… the story of ·Romulus and Remus In Roman mythology, Romulus and Remus were traditionally regarded as the sons of Rhea Silvia, who was the daughter of Numitor, king of Alba Longa
According to the legend, Numitor was deposed by his younger brother Amulius, who killed Numitor’s other son and forced Rhea Silvia to become a Vestal Virgin — a priestess of the goddess Vesta sworn to chastity — to prevent her from producing heirs who might challenge Amulius’s rule
Despite this, Rhea Silvia became pregnant, traditionally said to be by the war god Mars She gave birth to the twins Romulus and Remus, who were hidden from Amulius. Amulius ordered them to be drowned in the Tiber River, but their cradle floated downstream and came to rest near the sacred Ficus ruminalis fig tree at the future site of Rome
There, a she-wolf (lupa) and a woodpecker, both sacred to Mars, suckled and fed the infants until they were found by the shepherd Faustulus and his wife Acca Larentia Raised by them, the twins grew up to lead a band of youths who eventually overthrew Amulius, restored Numitor to the throne, and founded the city of Rome.
