MVAP Hallowe’en Extravaganza
Most of y’all know that the Spooky season is this editor’s favorite time of year. Nearly every Hallowe’en we have a celebratory post, and this year is no different.
But first, some trivia. You may have noticed I spell the word with an apostrophe. There is a reason for that; it is the more correct way to spell hallowe’en. Why? Because the word is a diminuation of All Hallows Even or the evening before All Hallow’s day. The contraction drops the ‘v’ in even and in standard english, that type of contraction requires an apostrophe.
All Hallows Day? That is another way to say All Saints Day, November 1st on the Christian liturgical calendar. It is a day that celebrates – surprise – all the saints.
There are ancient connections to the Celtic festival of Samhain -pronounced soo-in – that marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. Among other things, the ancient Celts dressed up, carved turnips and had bonfires to celebrate this quarter-year festival. The other quarter days are Imbolc in spring, Beltaine in May and Lughnasadh in August.
