    The View from Here

This is the first of what is likely to become a recurring post, albeit not necessarily a regular one, but whenever I feel like going off on something.

Fredo’s brother, the love gov has cancelled the New York State Fair. The Fair is a big deal in this neck of the woods, as the event is held in a small village just outside Syracuse. The Syracuse region, like most of Upstate NY, is in phase four of the reopening. I really don’t think he had much of a choice, and not because of the WuFlu. The fact is the state offices that processed vendor applications have been closed since February, and those applications needed to be submitted by the 15th of April.

A quick drive west on I-90 from me is the city of Rochester. Why am I mentioning Rochester you might ask? Well, over the weekend, some idiots removed the statue of Fredrick Douglass from one of the parks there. As there’s a distinct lack of white supremacists in these environs, I suspect it was some uneducated, AntiFa supporting, Marxists that did the deed. They managed to damage the plinth and broke one of the statues fingers in the act. The statue itself was found leaning on a chain link fence separating the park from the Genesee river gorge. As of this writing no suspects have been named by the Rochester PD or Monroe county sheriffs.

Many, if not all, of you have seen the reporting on the resurgence of the WuFlu in Texas, Arizona and Florida. Here’s the naked truth: cases are up, however, there’s context that isn’t being provided by the usual outlets. First, there are record numbers of tests being done every day. Second, the rate of infections has only gone up by about 2%, that means the virus isn’t spreading any faster. Third, the death rate continues to decline. Fourth, despite all the hype, ICU capacity is not about to be overwhelmed. Finally, the majority of new infections are in the 40 and under age group. That group is far less likely to experience poor outcomes from the virus. I’ll leave you with one astonishing stat, there have been more deaths in those 75 and above than there have been in those under 65.

Major League Baseball announced their 60 game schedule today. First pitch is supposed to be 23 July. This reporter is a huge baseball fan, and has been watching Korean league ball since they restarted a month ago and while it’s entertaining, it’s not the Yankees.

  • Cat Sh*t One

    Cat Sh*t One

This video showed up in my YouTube feed a couple of weeks ago. I liked it so much, I changed my avatar to one of the characters, Packy.

    From IMDB:

Botasky and Packy are private contractors, working in the Middle East, with support from a distant helicopter-mobile base. Their jobs are as “sniper” and “spotter”, the spotter is the team lead (as is accurate military protocol). Their assignment is to extract two captives, an ally, and a local. The characters are 1. Rabbits (contractors), and 2. Camels (locals). Rabbits seem to have been chosen due to the Japanese word for Rabbit is Usagi, which can be interpreted to be U.S.A. GI. The Team must interpret the situation, and decide whether to extract the victims themselves or wait for further support. Things seem to be moving rapidly in a negative direction, so the Team elects to split up, and do the extraction themselves. They split up, with Packy going into a village to locate and pull the victims out, and Botasky providing over-watch and sniping support. The fighting is rapid, and smooth, with Packy showing a great deal of speed and agility. The sniping is rapid and smooth. Packy’s weapon transfers are perfect. His shooting is controlled and precise, no wasted spray and pray mag dumps. The enemy gets ground support, which complicates things, Botasky is located and shut down as a sniper, and the rescue seems to be compromised, until the Team gets it’s own Air Support.

  • Prepper’s Corner: the rule of threes

Prepper’s Corner: the rule of threes

Welcome to the first edition of the Prepper’s Corner, where we’ll discuss the art of the prep. We’ll cover everything from getting started to advanced prepping.

Let’s start with the basics. And it doesn’t get more basic than the rule of three.

The Rule of Three helps you to remember the most important and prioritize the most urgent needs that you may have when in a survival situation.

    1. Three minutes without air or in icy water.
    2. Three hours without shelter in a harsh environment.
    3. Three days without water if you have shelter.
    4. Three weeks without food if you have shelter and water.

The first of the three is pretty self explanatory. If you can’t breathe, you’ve got about 3 minutes to live. An unprotected person will fall victim to hypothermia in short order in cold water.

The second rule can be interpreted in a couple of ways. Shelter doesn’t always mean a roof. In some instances, a fire or other source of heat will serve you better than a house. Conversely, there are times when a simple sun shade will be the choice. Regardless of the situation shelter from the elements is the primary concern in a survival situation.

Next up is water. The human body is around 60% water. A source of potable water is a must. Finding and purifying water is going to be your next mission after you find or build your shelter.

Food is the least of your concerns. The human body can last a relatively long time without food. That said, insufficient caloric intake can drastically reduce the amount of physical activity you can perform before tiring.

Got any tips about how to secure any of the items in the rule of three?

Been in a situation where you were in need of the three?

Have a suggestion for future editions of the Prepper’s Corner?

  • New Record Paddlefish caught

    New Record Paddlefish caught

An angler in Oklahoma caught the new record rod and reel Paddlefish Sunday while fishing at Keystone Lake.

James Lukehart landed the 146 pounds, 11 ounces monster that measured 70.5 inches with a 45-inch girth, after quite a fight he told Tulsa World.

The paddlefish was certified as Oklahoma’s newest rod-and-reel-state record by Paddlefish Research Center and Northeast Region Fisheries staff, the state wildlife department wrote. Since paddlefish are not considered “sport fish,” and must be snagged, the International Game Fish Association does not keep records on the catches, Tula World reported. Instead, they are kept by biologists and state departments.

The fish was released “under the guidance of ODWC and monitored” for survival after its measurements were taken, the department shared. Only one paddlefish can be harvested a day and two per year, according to the state regulations as part of its ongoing conservation efforts for the prehistoric fish.
