    Boxing Great George Foreman Dies

Born in Marshall Texas on January 10, 1949, Foreman was raised in Houston. He was a self-described troubled youth, dropping out of school at the age of 15. His turnaround started when he saw an ad for the Job Corps at 16. He earned his GED and several job skills in the Job Corps.

In 1968 George won a gold medal at the Mexico City Olympic Games. He beat the Soviet Union’s Jonas Cepulis by a referee stoppage. Foreman had beaten Cepulis bloody in the first round and forced a standing eight count in the second before the ref stopped the fight.

Foreman later said earning the Gold was the achievement he was most proud of in his boxing career.

George turned pro following the Olympics in 1969. He went undefeated in the first three years of his career, amassing a record of 32-0 with 29 knockouts.

In 1972, still undefeated and the #1 ranked contender in both the WBC and the WBA, two of the major sanctioning bodies, George squared off against undefeated and undisputed World Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier. Before the fight, Frazier was 29–0 (25 KO) and Foreman was 37–0 (34 KO).

Frazier was knocked down six times by Foreman within two rounds (the three-knockdown rule was not in effect for this bout). In ABC’s rebroadcast, Howard Cosell made the memorable call, “Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!”

After the second knockdown, Frazier’s balance and mobility were impaired to the extent that he was unable to evade Foreman’s combinations. Frazier managed to get to his feet for all six knockdowns, but referee Arthur Mercante  eventually called an end to the one-sided bout.

Foreman would take his first loss in Kinshasa Zaire in 1974 against Muhammad Ali.The Rumble in the Jungle was one of the most anticipated fights ever and it did not disappoint. Ali rope-a-doped his way to a victory and putting Big George on the canvas for the first time.

George first retired in 1979 after a health scare after a fight in Puerto Rico. After this experience, Foreman became a born-again Christian, dedicating his life for the next decade to God. Foreman stopped fighting and became an ordained minister, initially preaching on street corners before becoming the minister of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Houston

In 1987, after 10 years away from the ring, Foreman surprised the boxing world by announcing a comeback at the age of 38. After fighting a series of tomato cans, Foreman had a series of title shots. He fought – and lost to – Evander Holyfield, Alex Stewart and Tommy Morrison.

In 1994, George faced Michael Moorer for the IBF and WBA titles. Foreman was not ranked at the time, but his name recognition got the fight scheduled. Through the first 9 rounds, Moorer out-boxed Foreman. In the 10th however, George tagged Moorer with a short right to the chin and put out his lights. At age 45 George Foreman was World Champion again.

George only had a couple of title defenses. He wound up being stripped of his titles because of scheduling.

It was during this second run that George partnered with Salton on the George Foreman Grill.

He made more from the partnership with Salton than he did in his boxing career.

George Foreman died at age 76 surrounded by his family.

    Livestream: Crew 10 Returns

After spending more than 9 months at the International Space Station after their Boeing Starliner developed issues, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are on their way back to Earth. The trip is not in a Starliner however, but aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule named Crew 10.

It has been alleged that the length of the stay was influenced by politics. Joe Biden supposedly did not want to give SpaceX and Elon Musk a win in the run up to the election.

Crew 10 undocked from the orbiting outpost at 1.05am ET with Wilmore, Williams, NASA Astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov. Splashdown off the Florida coast near Tallahassee is estimated to be just before 1800 EDT.

  • Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Daoibh!

    Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Daoibh!

That is the Irish Gaelig way of wishing a group of people a happy St. Patrick’s day and its pronounced lah aluh PAH-drig SUN-uh YEE-uv. Yeah, I know, it doesn’t sound the way it’s spelled, nothing in Irish does. You can listen to the correct pronounciation below.

While elsewhere in the world St. Paddy’s day (and yes, it’s Paddy not Patty) is a party day, until relatively recently in Ireland the day was more subdued. It is still mainly a religious holiday there.

There are many misconceptions surrounding the life and times of Padraig. He wasn’t Irish. In fact he was a Roman who was enslaved by Irish raiders when he was a youth. He was credited with introducing the Irish to Christianity, yet part of his mission when he finally became a priest was to minister to the Christian community that already existed there. And then there’s the snake thing. Let’s be honest, there weren’t any snakes in Ireland before he got there, so he clearly didn’t chase them away.

He isn’t even the only patron saint of Ireland nor arguably the most important. St. Brigid and St. Columcille (Columba) are both patron saints of Ireland along with St. Brendan the navigator who is supposed to have sailed to North America in the 5th century.

Now on to the fun stuff. Booze. Here are a couple of drinks/cocktails to enjoy during your Paddy’s day celebrations.

You can’t go wrong with a pint of the Black. Guinness has been brewed exclusively at the St. James Gate brewery in Dublin since 1759 when Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000 year lease. The company pays 45 pounds a month in rent.

    St James Gate, Dublin

If your tastes run to lighter brews, check out Smithwick’s (pronounced Smiddicks), Harp or any of the fine beers from O’Hara’s. You could try a half and half – half a pint of Guinness and half a pint of a lager, usually Harp – just don’t call it a black and tan if you’re in a pub in Ireland.

If it’s whiskey you’re drinking – and the Irish invented it – this editor has a specific recommendation: Killbeggan. You could be plebian and drink John Jameson’s, you could be a poseur and drink Teeling, you could be a bloody Prod and drink Bushmills. There are others, Tullamore DEW being prominent, and if this editor is being honest, even that Prod shite is good.

If it’s a cocktail you be cravin’ give this one a shot (no pun intended). It’s called the Irish Cactus and it’s just a two ingredients Bailey’s and tequila. Fill a whiskey glass with ice, pour in two ounces of Bailey’s and then add an ounce of tequila and stir. Theres some history behind this drink. The Batallón de San Patricio, around 175 Irish and Irish-American men fought for Mexico in the Mexican-American war of 1846-8.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day Everyone!!!! Just take care not to drink too much, Paddy’s day hangovers can be killers. . .

Breaking: US Strikes Houthi Positions in Yemen

Featured Image: Reported image of Hodieda port

At the direction of the President, US forces have begun large scale strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen today. The strikes have targeted radar sites, missile launchers and drone facilities.

It is being reported that the airport at Sana’a and the ports at Hodeida and Ras Issa have been rendered out of order by the strikes.

The Houthi, also known as Ansar Allah, are a Shia rebel group that control parts of Yemen. They have been in a long running civil war in that country with Iran backing their co-religionists and the House of Saud backing the Yemeni government.

President Trump issued a statement on Truth social shortly after the strikes began.

Today, I have ordered the United States Military to launch decisive and powerful Military action against the Houthi terrorists in Yemen. They have waged an unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism against American, and other, ships, aircraft, and drones.

He concluded his statement with a warning to Iran, the primary backer of the Houthi.

To Iran: Support for the Houthi terrorists must end IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT threaten the American People, their President, who has received one of the largest mandates in Presidential History, or Worldwide shipping lanes. If you do, BEWARE, because America will hold you fully accountable and, we won’t be nice about it!

  • Rubio Boots South African Ambassdor

    Rubio Boots South African Ambassdor

Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared the Ambassador to the US from South Africa, Embrahim Rasool, persona non grata.

Rasool, 62, a South African muslim of mixed English-Javanese-Dutch-Indian heritage, called President Donald Trump a white supremacist and made disparaging comments about the US at a conference in Johannesburg last week.

He made the comments in a speech about the current SA plans to expropriate land, farms and businesses from white Boer and Afrikaaner families to give to blacks. The ruling ANC recently changed the laws in South Africa to allow the lands to be taken without recompense.

Rasool had been Ambassador to the US from 2010-2015. He was re-nominated by SA president Cyril Ramaphosa near the end of Bidens term and was accepted by Biden on 13 January of this year.

For those unfamiliar with the term in diplomatic circles, declaring someone persona non grata – Latin for a person not wanted or an unwelcome person – is tantamount to expelling that person from the country.  A host country may declare any member of a diplomatic staff persona non grata at any time without any explanation.

  • Cloture Invoked For CR

    Cloture Invoked For CR

Despite everything that Chuck Shumer tried, the Senate invoked cloture on the House spending continuing resolution. The final vote was 62-38. 10 Dems crossed the aisle for this procedural vote to end debate in the resolution. They were:

    • Chuck Schumer NY
    • Angus King ME
    • Dick Durbin IL
    • Catherine Cortez Masto NV
    • Brian Schatz HI
    • Maggie Hassan NH
    • John Fetterman PA
    • Gary Peters MI
    • Kristin Gillibrand NY
    • Jean Shaheen NH

This is a big loss for the Dems. Despite all their histrionics since the CR cleared the House, they proved impotent when it came time to hold the votes.

I think they mostly realized any shutdown would have been – rightfully – laid at their feet.

According to multiple reports yesterday, Kristin Gillibrand could be heard yelling at the top of her lungs about it from outside of a Dem caucus luncheon event yesterday. She was not happy about the hard line Chuck Shumer had taken and made sure the rest of the caucus heard about it. Chuck’s opposition to the CR can be summed up by something the Bard said: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

This all but guarantees the CR will pass this evening, as the Republicans have the votes needed to send the spending bill to the President’s desk.
