    Reproductive Freedom…

As a preface, if anyone wishes to use this thread to discuss abortion itself, please feel free to do so.

It would seem there are four Senators who do not wish to allow states/Commonwealths(4), and their citizens, a decision on what their abortion policy will be.

Today, U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the Reproductive Freedom For All Act. This legislation would enact in federal law the essential holdings of Roe v. Wade and related cases, protecting abortion rights and contraception access. This would undo the damage of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and would enshrine in federal law the fundamental right to reproductive freedom.

For myself, I am betwixt and between on whether there should be a Federal law. With a Federal standard, there would be uniformity. On the other side is the argument that this is a ’state’s rights’ issue.

  • SCOTUS Overturns Roe and Casey

    SCOTUS Overturns Roe and Casey

In what was probably the most anticipated case on the Supreme Court docket this term, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Justices ruled there is no Constitutional right to abortion.

In a 6-3 split, the Court ruled the Mississippi law restricting abortions underpinning the case Constitutional, while a narrower 5-4 split overturned both Roe v Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v Casey (1992). The majority opinion was authored by Samuel Alito and joined by Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett. Chief Justice Roberts authored a separate concurrence that upheld the Mississippi law but arguing the court shouldn’t have gone so far as to overturn Roe and Casey. Justices Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan filed a joint dissent.

You can read the decision here.

This editor does not have a strong opinion about the topic of abortion, however, he does have strong opinions about Roe v Wade. The ruling was an abomination foisted upon the country by an activist bench. Nowhere in the constitution is there a right to abort an unborn child. The right to do so was made up out of whole cloth and fairy dust. The Court was correct in ignoring stare decis and overturning Roe and by extension Casey.

The net legal effect of this decision is that abortion law will be returned to the states. Most states have already passed legislation on abortion since the leak of the draft opinion in February.

There will be other effects. I fully expect there to be violent “protests” this weekend. Terrorists groups like Jane’s List and Ruth Sent Us have already started attacking pregnancy services centers. Look for more and more of that. If you live in a major population center, be prepared for disruptions. Hurry out right now and get your weekend errands done before there is time for these terrorists to organize and the riots, errr, protests to start. And for God’s sake, be safe out there.

    Malarkey – Selling Crazy

At first, I believed the egregious leak from SCOTUS was to influence a change in the opinion. With the howling hysteria and protests, it may be more all the unemployed gender studies twitbrains needed some income. Many of these protesters are paid. What an easy job. March around some of the best neighborhoods in DMV and be paid. Further, the press was confronted with the abysmal reality of the Joementia administration and along comes this marvelous distraction.

  • Compromise

    Compromise

Is there a compromise position on abortion?

Back in the day many were somewhat willing to accept abortion with the caveat it be limited to the first trimester of pregnancy. This was a begrudging acceptance. Further, there were multiple declarations it would be ”rare”. 62 million abortions later, it has gone from first trimester to ”late term” up to and including immediately prior to giving birth.

There is a recent poll with the following results.
In the latest poll, nearly two-thirds believed that abortion should be illegal after 15 weeks, with a majority believing abortion should be illegal after the first trimester. A 15-week ban on abortion is precisely what is before the Supreme Court right now.
With that all that information and poll:

    A. Should abortion be completely banned except in extreme medical situations?

    B. Should it be limited to the first trimester?

    C. Should it be limited to 15 weeks?

    D. Should it be without any limitations?

  • SCOTUS Possible Ruling

    SCOTUS Possible Ruling

There has been a leak from SCOTUS that Roe v. Wade may be overturned. A portion of the leaked document reads as follows:

“Abortion presents a profound moral question. The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return that authority to the people and their elected representatives.”

“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.”

The leaking of possible decision is a MAJOR blemish on the reputation of the Court.
