It’s FriYAY! and time for some fun here at MVAP. As a friendly reminder, you only have 4 shopping days left until Christmas. Your editor only wants one thing; a Freightliner FLU-419 Small Emplacement Excavator.
On a slightly serious note, vote early if you can. There’s no telling what might happen in the future and some wisdom can’t wait as the Wise Ass On The Hill tells us.
It’s FRIYAY! Time for some shenanigans here at MVAP. . .
Let’s kick off this week’s edition of FF with a bit about America’s Pastime, Baseball. The MLB Playoffs started this past Saturday and so far the two New York teams have punched their tickets to the League Championship series, The Mets by beating the Phillies 3 games to 1 and the Yankees beating the Royals 3-1 in their respective divisional series. The remaining 4 teams are San Diego and the LA in the NL and Detroit and Cleveland in the AL. Both series are tied 2-2.
Narrator: DO NOT eat any mushroom you haven’t positively identified as edible. Best case scenario you have an out of body experience – worst case you die.
It’s Friyay! Time for our weekly excursion into the lighter side. Before we get into our usual faffery, I want to extend my prayers and well-wishes to any-and-everyone impacted by Helene. Look for a piece about that Bitch in a little bit.
There are a couple of Baseball notes I’d like to cover. First up, both the Dodgers and Yankees locked up their respective divisions last night, the Dodgers by beating the Padres 7-2, the Yankees by laying a 10-1 spanking on the Orioles. I should note that both teams clinched by beating their respective 2nd place opponent.
The other Baseball note is a bit less positive. The Oakland Athletics played their last game at the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum. They will now play at least two seasons in an upgraded minor league stadium in Sacramento before eventually moving into new digs in Las Vegas. The team had been in Oakland for 57 years. Prior to that, they did a short-ish 13 year stint in KC. The team was one of the founding clubs in the American League, playing in Philadelphia from 1901 to 1955.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. . .
We’re going to kick this week’s edition off a bit differently. Baseball history was made yesterday. Shohei Ohtani became the first member of the 50-50 club. For those who aren’t baseball fans, that means he hit 50 home runs and stole 50 bases. The previous mark for speed and power was the 40-40 club, and only 5 other players in MLB history have done it. They are Ronald Acuña Jr., Braves, 2023, Alfonso Soriano, Nationals, 2006, Alex Rodriguez, Mariners, 1998, Barry Bonds, Giants, 1996, and the initial member of the club, Jose Canseco, A’s, 1988.
It’s FriYay! Time for a bit of faffery and some shenanigans. The OKDWC didn’t have anything new for us this week so here’s a bit of good news from the USFWS.
⭐Apache trout!⭐ Is the 1st sport fish species to be recovered and removed from the Federal List of Threatened & Endangered species. Thanks to conservation efforts led by the White Mountain Apache Tribe and collaboration between Tribal, state, federal partners. pic.twitter.com/cnmgdEGEUl
It’s the last Friday of August, and the last Friday before Labor day, the unofficial end of summer.
AAND they’re back!
Why is it always "how's the fishing" and not "how's the fisheries biologist?"

DYK there are about 300 species of freshwater mussels in North America? The habitat crew Lower Great Lakes Fish & Wildlife Conservation Office participated in snorkel surveys in the Cacapon River this summer and identified 7 different species of freshwater mussels! pic.twitter.com/P3EQ6C5bgI
