    Huh, Who’da Thunk?

Well I learned something today. Hawaii is not covered by Article 5 of the NATO charter. That means if there was an attack on Hawaii — by say, the CCP or North Korea — the other NATO countries would not be bound to aid the US.

Seems a bit odd no? It turns out there is a reason for the lack of inclusion. It’s spelled out in Article 6 of the Charter.

For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack:

    • on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France 2, on the territory of Turkey or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer;
    • on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer
    NATO
    NATO HQ, Brussels

That was why nobody but the US helped out the Brits when Argentina got a little froggy about the Falklands in 1982. Las Malvinas are not in the North Atlantic, not by a long shot. Neither is Hawaii.

A US State Department spokesperson confirmed that Hawaii is not covered by Article 5, but said Article 4, which says members will consult when “the territorial integrity, political independence or security” of any member is threatened, should cover any situation that could affect the 50th state. The spokesperson also said any treaty amendment to include Hawaii would be unlikely to gain consensus because other members have territories outside of the boundaries set in Article 5.

Consult, yeah. The fact is, the CCP leadership sees this as a potential wedge between the US and NATO. At least most of NATO, the Brits would jump in on our side if the PLA attacked Pearl Harbor or INDOPACOM HQ at Camp Smith. As an armchair strategist, an attack on Honolulu is a probable first step if the ChiComs decide to finally attack Taiwan.

WATCH: Devestated Maui Resident Absolutely Demolishes Joe Biden

Joe Biden’s trip to Maui, HI, did not go well. There’s been ample evidence of that, whether one is talking about his performance on the ground, or how people reacted to it.

The president didn’t show up until nearly two weeks after the fires destroyed the City of Lahaina, and even then, he only interrupted his vacation in Lake Tahoe for a few hours. Once there, Biden riffed on how he almost lost his ’67 Corvette in a fire and joked about how hot the ground looked. That’s when he wasn’t dozing off or appearing to be nearly incapacitated.

In the aftermath of the controversial visit, more residents of Maui are speaking out about how they feel, and one woman did not mince words.

    (Warning: Language)

RESIDENT: Still today, I haven’t had any money come in, I haven’t had anybody call me back. I didn’t have anything, I have no idea. I lost my house. I lost my car. I lost my animals. I mean, come on man, we’re not getting anything. So today, I still did not get my meds. I did not get my meds yet. My medicine was all burnt in my house. My rent money was all burnt in my house. I have no money anymore.

I think Joe Biden should take his $700 and get back on the ******* plane, that’s what I think. The $700 compared to all the millions of dollars he’s giving to Ukraine. Why? We need it. That’s what we don’t understand why. We’re citizens and we can not get money, but if they’re not citizens, they get gazillions of dollars form the USA. Where’s are government? Fix your house before you fix somebody else’s house.

    (…)

Everybody feels that way, come on. That’s why the local people stick together, and we help our own people because we know the outside people are not gonna do it.

Given the political demographics of Maui, and especially Lahaina, it is extremely likely this woman voted for Joe Biden. I point that out to say that it’s obvious her angst isn’t coming from a place of partisan politics. She’s genuinely angry at the president’s lack of care for what occurred (as shown in his behavior on the ground), and she does not understand why American citizens are given a pittance while hundreds of billions of dollars are being given to Ukraine.

Even those who unquestionably support continuing to fund Ukraine’s defense against Russia should take what she says to heart. Lack of nuance or not, it’s how a lot of people feel when they see the nation’s checkbook constantly wide open for various foreign concerns (including illegal immigrants crossing the US border) when they can’t even get a call back from FEMA.

Regardless, Biden’s inability to project anything but sociopathic selfishness is one of the issues here. The federal government isn’t all-powerful, and it can’t solve every problem, but it shouldn’t be actively insulting those suffering either. The president’s trip to Maui was a disaster, and it was a disaster of his own making. Showing up and yucking it up for selfies while laughing about his cat almost dying in a kitchen fire? Who does that?

Unfortunately, people get the governance they vote for, and the nation is stuck with Joe Biden in the White House. Perhaps this will be a wake-up call on that front.

    Hawaii braces for Douglas

Hurricane Douglas can be seen as a major Category 3 storm. (NOAA/GOES-East)

The National Hurricane Center has issued hurricane warnings for the Hawaiian islands. Hurricane Douglas is forecast to hit the island chain Sunday into Monday. Douglas is a Category 3 storm, which means it has sustained winds between 111 and 129 mph.

The Islands may see strong winds and flash flooding as the storm passes over the island chain Early Sunday into Monday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center of the storm, while tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles.

The last major hurricane to strike the state was Hurricane Iniki in 1992, which hit Kauai and caused massive damage across the island. In 2018, the massive and powerful Hurricane Lane made a last-minute turn and narrowly spared Oahu.

I have to wonder what is going on with the Trump campaign. Every poll I’ve seen shows Trump trailing Plugs by a considerable margin. My take? The campaign lacks a coherent direction. For every positive step forward, there seems to be a step or two backwards. For historical perspective, this was the position his campaign found itself in 2016. What happened to change it? He brought in Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway to run everything. Perhaps it’s time for a shake up.

Heres a quick update on the Bonhomme Richard, direct from the Navy:

Obama apparatchik Valerie Jarrett weighed in on the WuFlu debate.

I hate to sound ableist, but that’s the most retarded thing I’ve ever heard. New York had 33,000 (and counting) covid19 deaths, more than 6,000 in nursing homes and seeded the rest of the goddamned country. In what world is that to be praised? Then again, Jarrett thought the Iranians would abide by the JCPOA.

Speaking of Iran, they seem to be experiencing some accidents of late. The latest happening yesterday at liquid gas plant in the Kavian Fariman industrial zone, south of the city of Masshad. This comes on the heels of explosions at a pair of suspected nuclear sites.

The bigmouth er, Senator from Hawaii is at it again. Mazie Hirono, in a televised interview, called Trump supporters white supremacists.

I, for one, have had it up to here with politicians saying shite like that, and not getting called on it. I suppose representing a state where there’s zero chance of being voted out has its perks. . . .

Tomorrow is the Alabama GOP Senate run-off. It pits former Alabama senator and Attorney General Jeff I have to recuse myself Sessions and former Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville led Sessions by 13,000 votes in the regular primary, but Alabama rules state a run-off is necessary. Whoever wins is expected to beat Doug Jones , the Dem who beat Roy Moore for Sessions old seat.
