    Strike Over at Bath Ironworks

IAM Local S6 and management at Bath Ironworks, a Maine shipbuilder, have come to terms on a contract pending ratification. This tentative agreement ends a labor stoppage that lasted more than a month.

Bath, a subsidiary of General Dynamics, is the shipyard that produces all of the Navy’s Arleigh Burke destroyers.

The proposal, which was unanimously endorsed by the union’s negotiating team, will be put forth to the 4,300 members of Machinists Local S6 later this month, said Jay Wadleigh, a district union official.

Voting on the proposal will take place online and via telephone from Friday, Aug. 21, to Sunday, Aug. 23.

Woman Killed by Shark in Maine

A swimmer in Maine was apparently attacked and killed by a shark this afternoon officials from the Maine Marine Patrol said. The attack happened off Bailey Island in Harpswell.

The woman, whose name is not being released until her family has been notified, was swimming off the shore near homes on White Sails Lane when a witness saw her being attacked by what appeared to be a shark.

A pair of kayakers brought the woman to shore and first responders were called to the scene. They pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Maine Marine Patrol is urging swimmers and boaters to use caution near Bailey Island until further notice — and to avoid swimming near seals or fish.
