Terror in NOLA: What We Know Right Now

Around 0315 this morning, a white Ford F-150 Lightning pickup bypassed security bollards and drove at a high rate of speed down a section of Bourbon Street in New Orleans. At least 10 people were killed and more than 30 injured. The incident occurred as Bourbon Street and the French Quarter was packed with New Year’s Eve revelers.

The driver was engaged by NOPD. Gunfire was exchanged and the driver was killed. Two NOPD officers were wounded in the gun battle. At least one IED was found at the site. The latest reporting says the device was an actual explosive device.

New Orleans Mayor,  LaToya Cantrell, immediately issued a statement calling this an act of terrorism. Meanwhile, the FBI, through a spokesperson, initially said it was not terror related.

Recent reports have identified the terrorist as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar. It is being reported that he had an ISIS flag on a pole attached to the truck as he drove through the crowd. A Glock handgun and a .308 caliber rifle were recovered from the crime scene.

President Trump Issued a statement on the attack on Truth Social at 0948 EDT this morning. He called the attack an . . .”act of pure evil” and offered his condolences to the victims.

POTATUS on the other hand tweeted out well wishes for the New Year around 1000 EDT and did not release an official statement for at least another hour. When that announcement came, it was . . . well, read it and make up your own minds.

I have been continually briefed since early this morning by federal law enforcement leadership and my homeland security team, including Secretary of Homeland Security Ali Mayorkas, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, White House Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall, and the Mayor of New Orleans regarding the horrific incident that occurred there overnight. The FBI is taking the lead in the investigation and is investigating this incident as an act of terrorism. I am grateful for the brave and swift response of local law enforcement in preventing even greater death and injury. I have directed my team to ensure every resource is available as federal, state, and local law enforcement work assiduously to get to the bottom of what happened as quickly as possible and to ensure that there is no remaining threat of any kind.

I will continue to receive updates throughout the day, and I will have more to say as we have further information to share. In the meantime, my heart goes out to the victims and their families who were simply trying to celebrate the holiday. There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation’s communities.

Just as I was going to publish, it was confirmed that the attacker was a US citizen, an Army Vet, and was born and raised in Texas. I wonder how long it is before the FBI has to admit he was known to them.

    Terror Attack In Rochester NY?

Late last night/early this morning there was an incident outside the Kodak Center on Ridge road in Rochester New York. A man identified as Michael Avery, 35, of Syracuse, drove his rented Ford Expedition into another car and a crowd gathered as they were leaving the venue. The crash killed 2 in addition to Avery and injured 9 more.

Avery traveled to the Rochester area on or around Dec. 27 after driving his personal vehicle to Rochester and checked into the WoodSpring Suites in the town of Greece. On Dec. 29, Avery rented the Expedition from a rental car agency at the Rochester Airport.

On Dec. 30, Avery made multiple purchases of gasoline and gas containers from different locations in the area of Monroe and Ontario counties, police said. He was alone when making these purchases.

Security video shows the Ford Expedition on fire, crashing head-on into the other vehicle and pushing it backwards. One person covered in flames got out of the cars.

A search of Avery’s hotel room turned up no suicide note or journal, leaving questions about his motivations. Police are still combing through evidence found after a search of Avery’s personal vehicle but have found no clear indications of a motive.

An FBI joint terrorism task force is investigating the incident but they have found no evidence of connections to ideologies or terrorist groups.

    Notre Dame Basilica, Nice

Three people were killed in an attack at the Notre Dame basilica in Nice, France. A terrorist entered the church around 9 a.m. local time, yelling “Allahu Akbar” and proceeded to behead at least one woman. There are conflicting reports as to whether a man was also beheaded in the church or stabbed to death. The third victim ran out of the church but “was hunted down and killed.”

“It seems that, according to the first findings of the police, the woman who was inside the church has been decapitated. For the other victims, we cannot say anything at the moment,” Nice’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, told reporters.

“The suspected knife attacker was shot by police while being detained. He is on his way to hospital, he is alive,” Estrosi added.

In the Nice attack, the first victim – a woman in her seventies – was attacked after coming there early to pray and was found ‘almost beheaded’ close to the church font.

A 45-year-old sacristan, named locally as Vincent L, a father-of-two, was then attacked and also beheaded.

A third woman – described as of African origin and aged in her 30s – was then stabbed ‘multiple times’ and managed to flee to a bar across the street, where she died.

Police were called and arrived at 9.10am. They stormed the cathedral, shooting and arresting the attacker. (DailyMail)

Jean Castex, the Prime Minister, raised the country’s security alert to “emergency” after the terror attack. Castex said “the attack was as cowardly as it was barbaric and puts the entire country in mourning.”

A short time later, in Avignon, about two hours from Nice, a gunman yelling “Allahu Akbar” threatened people on the streets before being shot dead by police.

Meanwhile in Lyon, an Afghan man in his 20s was arrested while trying to board a tram carrying a long knife. The man was known to French intelligence services.

In Sartrouville, north of Paris, a man was arrested around 1pm after his father called police and said his son had left home and planned ‘to do as in Nice.’ Police stopped the man, who was in possession of a large knife, in his car near a local church.
