Federal Judge and Family Targeted

Federal Judge Esther Salas and her husband Mark Anderl

The son and husband of a New Jersey based federal Judge were shot by an unknown assailant last night.

The shooting occurred at the North Brunswick, N.J., home of Judge Esther Salas, a source told The Associated Press. The AP report, citing the state’s chief district judge, said the son, 20, was killed. NJ.com reported that the shooting occurred at about 5 p.m.

Daniel Anderl, a college student, was the judge’s only child, the AP reported. Salas’ husband Mark Anderl, 63, a defense attorney was injured. Salas was in a different part of the house and is uninjured.

The gunman posed as a delivery driver for FedEx, two sources told NJ.com. The report said that Salas, 51, was the first Hispanic female appointed to the U.S. District Court in New Jersey.

Salas has heard some high-profile cases in her tenure as a federal judge, including the case of reality TV star Teresa Guidice, and was recently assigned a case involving Deutsche Bank. That case indirectly touches on convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

The FBI, US Marshall’s service, ATF, and state and local agencies are all investigating.
