The View from Here

Today’s featured image is of the east branch of the Tioughnioga river. The east branch starts in Madison county and flows through Cortland and Broome counties before merging with the Chenango river just north of Binghamton NY. The Tio is one of this editor’s favorite small rivers to fish.

The Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt says protesters rioters who took part in George Floyd protests will only be prosecuted for assault, theft or property damage in a new retroactive policy.

“We will presumptively decline to charge cases where the most serious offenses are city ordinance violations and crimes that do not involve deliberate property damage, theft, or the use or threat of force against another person,” according to Schmidt.

The crimes of interfering with a police officer, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, harassment (when classified as a misdemeanor) or rioting will no longer be prosecuted.

Good Night Portland. . . .

And in Chiraq, it came out that Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx has declined to prosecute 29.9% of the felony cases sent to her office. For reference, her predecessor declined at about a 19% rate.

Is it any wonder Chicago is in the midst of a crime wave? There have been over 1800 shootings, up 48 percent since last year. According to Chicago police records, 455 people have been murdered just this year, an increase of 55 percent over the same time last year.

For some good news out of Chicago, residents there have had enough. Some BLM supporters showed up in the Englewood neighborhood and were promptly told to bugger off by residents.

More of this please. . . .

It seems eye makeup is the next thing to be cancelled. The so-called fox eye trend is now raciss I guess. Cultural appropriation or sommat like that.

To be fair, I don’t know what pulling on your temples like that does for looks. While this editor has never worn eye makeup (well, that one time for Halloween, but a stripper did it for me and so that doesn’t count) he does know that style of eye makeup goes back thousands of years in the west.

A pair of state polls are looking good for the President’s bid for reelection. In separate polls in Arizona and Minnesota of all places, support for Trump has increased. The Minnesota poll is especially interesting as no repub has won statewide since Tim Pawlenty won reelection as governor in ’06.

Polls nationwide have tightened in the past few weeks. It will be interesting to see what the announcement of Harris for VP does.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (C, Mogadishu) won her primary last night. This all but guarantees her return to Congress next year. Unless she gets perp walked for something in the mean time. . . .

A USAF Huey was struck by gunfire today. The UH-1N, assigned to the 1st Helicopter Squadron at Joint Base Andrews, was on a routine training mission when the helicopter was struck by a bullet, the Air Force said in a statement. The Choppa was at about 1,000 feet when the bullet struck. The helicopter made an emergency landing at the Manassas Regional Airport, and federal agents were called to the scene to investigate, the FBI said in a statement. One crew member was injured and has been treated and released.

Marion County FL Sheriff Billy Wood has issued a mandate on mask wearing. Namely, his deputies are not allowed to wear masks under most circumstances. Exceptions are made for those deputies who work in schools, the courthouse, the jail, at a hospital, and officers who are in contact with a person suspected of having the coronavirus or an individual who is high-risk for contracting the virus are allowed to wear face masks. The concern is that officers cannot be understood when their mouth is covered.
