Karen & Joe Beauchaine, owners of the Christmas Mall (don’t picture the Mall of America), busily postmarking—by hand—

The Christmas Mall isn’t a bona fide post office, but when mail addressed to Christmas, Michigan, arrives at the Munising post office during the holidays, the postal employees there know to bring it over to the Beauchaines for hand stamping. The service is a tradition in Christmas, but no one is sure exactly when it started. In recent memory the postmarking was done at a now-defunct store in Christmas. Later it was stamped at the Munising post office. The Beauchaines took over the labor of love in 1995, a few years after purchasing their convenience store/gift shop. In 1997—the first year they counted—they stamped 11,218 pieces of mail.

A unit of measure ” TAD “

as in

Christmas is just a tad West of Munising

How to get a Christmas postmark:

• Fill out your holiday cards and place them in sealed envelopes.
• Address the envelopes as you normally would with names and destinations.
• Place a postage stamp on each card to be postmarked.
• Put all of the self-addressed, pre-stamped cards inside of a box or mailing envelope, and send to: US Post Office, 220 Elm Avenue, Munising, MI 49862.
• Once received, the post office will postmark your holiday cards and send them off to their recipients.
Tip: Don’t forget to address one of the cards to yourself, if you want to see what the postmark looks like. That way, one of your cards gets mailed back to you from Christmas, Michigan

Some history of the area

Christmas is also located near the Bay Furnace campgrounds on Lake Superior in the Hiawatha National Forest. From 1869 to 1877, the campground was the site of Onota, an iron smelting town with a population of 517. The town was destroyed by fire in 1877 and only the iron kiln ruins remain. While in operation, Bay Furnace produced 20 tons of pig iron a day. Ships came to the 1200 foot dock bringing supplies and taking out the pig iron.
