22 years ago, a group of Islamic terrorists hijacked four separate planes with the sole intention of flying them into buildings. Three of the four did just that.
Two of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Flight 175 struck the two towers of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. The towers collapsed as a result of the damage.
American Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. The crash caused a partial collapse of the outer facade on the western side of the building.
The remaining hijacked plane, United Flight 93, crashed into a field near Shanksville PA after several passengers decided to fight back.
The attacks killed 2977 people and injured thousands more. The death toll included 265 on the four planes (from which there were no survivors); 2,606 in the World Trade Center and in the surrounding area; and 125 at The Pentagon, Most who died were civilians; the rest included 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers and 55 military personnel.
I will never forget where I was that day, in the truck on the way to go fishing with Howard Stern on the radio, when he broke in with the news. I immediately turned around and headed to find a TV, so I could see what was happening.
