Massive Power Outage Hits Europe

Massive Power Outage Hits Europe

A massive power outage has hit Spain, Portugal, Andorra and parts of France near the Spanish border. Somewhere between 20 and 50 million people have been affected by the outage.

Transportation infrastructure has been affected with most airports closed, flights cancelled, trains stopped and traffic lights off. Communications are spotty at best.

At this point, the Spanish grid operator, Red Electrica, says they have restored power to some areas, but total restoration may take a day or more.

The Portugees grid operator RED issued a statement. They blamed the outage on ‘anomalous atmospheric conditions’ and may take up to a week for full restoration.

Efforts are being coordinated at high levels. Despite speculation of a cyberattack, no evidence supports this, though investigations continue, with a fire on Alaric Mountain in France damaging a high-voltage line as a possible contributing factor.
