India – Pakistan Conflict; Where Does It Stand?

India – Pakistan Conflict; Where Does It Stand?

I assume most of you are aware of the current conflict between India and Pakistan. If you are not, this iteration (there have been dozens of border flare-ups between the two since partition in 1947) started last week after some Pakistan-backed Islamic militants attacked a tourist area in Kashmir.

India, rightly in my opinion, thinks those militants are under the direct control of the Paki intel agency called the ISI. Regardless, Lashkar-e-Taiba killed 26 and injured dozens more in the Baisaran Valley, near Pahalgam, a very popular tourist destination in Kashmir. It has been widely reported that the terrorists asked if people were Hindu, Sikh or muslim before killing the non-muslims.

A few days after that horrific attack, India targeted LeT and JeM (Jaish e Muhammed another ISI backed Salafist terror group) sites across Pakistan.

Accurate reporting about what targets were struck and the amount of damage produced is rare, so I cannot confirm any claims.

Pakistan retaliated, or so they have claimed. Again, there is little to no accurate reportage coming out of this conflict.

Earlier today President Trump announced a negotiated ceasefire had been agreed to.

The ceasefire apparently did not last long. There have been numerous reports of Pakistan violating the agreement along the LOC in Kashmir. Some reports indicate that the Indian government has authorized reprisals for the Paki violations.

I suppose I need to point out that both India and Pakistan are nuclear powers. India has about 180 warheads, Pakistan about 170. Those are the only weapons that are anywhere near parity though. India has a much larger Army, Navy and Air Force. Both countries use a mix of western and Soviet/Russian/Chinese equipment.
