MVAP Sports Roundup

It’s been a while since the last MVAP sports post. So here is the latest news from the wide world of sports.

A couple of days ago, Team USA hockey won their first world championship in 92 years. Tage Thompson scored the lone goal of the game in overtime and Jeremy Swayman stopped all 25 shots he faced to beat the Swiss team in the finals.

This tourney win comes after the US came in 2nd behind Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-off back in February.

If you’ve been around MVAP for any length of time you know that I am a huge baseball fan. Last night marked the 1/3rd point of the season for a lot of the teams. So, here are a few stats, stories and trend lines from MLB so far this season.

The Yankeee’s outfielder Aaron Judge is leading in a bunch of offensive categories, some of them by a lot. As of last night’s Yanks win against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Judge was hitting .395 with a .488 on-base, .746 slug and his 1.234 OPS is nearly 200 points higher than Ohtani in second. His 18 homers are third behind Shohei Ohtani’s 20 and Cal Raleigh’s 19.

Tarik Skubal, Detroit’s stud starting pitcher, is a strong contender for the Cy Young. In his last start against Cleveland in Detroit, Skubal threw a Maddux – a complete-game shutout on fewer than 100 pitches – on 94 pitches. He also threw the hardest pitch ever recorded at Comerica park at 102.6 mph. Skubal has a 5-2 record with a 2.49 ERA in 11 starts this year.

AL division leaders east to west are the Yankees, Tigers and Mariners. The division leaders in the Senior circuit are the Phillies, Cubs and Dodgers.

There are NBA playoffs. Who is winning and who is losing? I don’t know and frankly don’t care, but being the good editor I am, here’s who is still standing.

In the East, the Knicks are trailing the Pacers 3-1 for the conference title and a shot at the finals. The Thunder are up 3-1 on the T-wolves in the West. The only good thing I see is that the phony Lebron James got eliminated.

The hunt for Lord Stanley’s cup is down to the last four. The odds on favorite Florida Panthers are up 3 games to 1 over the Carolina Hurricanes. Out west, the Dallas Stars are down 3-1 against the Edmonton Oilers.

Apropos of nothing at all, it has been 32 years since a Canadian team took home Lord Stanley’s cup. That year the Montreal Canadiens beat the Los Angeles Kings in 5.

Your Editor is a Rangers fan and has been since he saw his first game at The World’s Most Famous Arena as a youngster. They lost to the ‘Canes in the first round this year, so I haven’t followed the playoffs as closely as I usually do.
