Random News and Notes 11 July

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided a California farm yesterday. The Glass House farm in Ventura county grows Mary Jane. Shortly after the raid started, protesters showed up trying to disrupt the operation. It got violent. At one point some dolt started shooting at ICE with a pistol.

Among others, ICE found 10 illegal minors working at the facility, 8 of them unaccompanied.

Fox News reporter Bill Melugin, who is probably the best source for this kind of thing put together a recap:

. . . – Protesters throw rocks at federal vehicles.
– 8 unaccompanied migrant children recovered at the cannabis farm, child labor investigation initiated. Situation there is still ongoing & active

There is a $50,000 bounty out on the guy who was shooting at agents.

Like Admiral Painter said in Red October: This business will get out of control. This will get out of control we’ll be lucky to live through it.

OMB director Russ Vought took a shot at fed chair Jerome Powell today. It seems Powell has overseen the renovation of the Fed building in DC and it is now $700 million over budget. And that is the guy that sets interest rates?

I’m sorry. All federal offices should be the most basic spaces imaginable. There should not be any extravagance at all.

The DOD is withdrawing the nomination for promotion of RADM Micael Donnelly to VADM. While we don’t know the exact reason, Donnelly was in command of the USS Ronald Reagan when some highly publicized drag shows were held.

It may be that Donnelly is woke and that should be a disqualifier. However, the Navy has a long tradition of drag performances while underway. And no, this isn’t a gratuitous shot at my squid friends. Drag was a part of line crossing ceremonies dating back to the 1800s.

This one makes me smile. The Department of Education announced that an illegal Biden era policy that eliminated interest on certain student loans would be ending. Starting 1 August, SAVE borrowers will face hving to pick a repayment plan or have their credit dinged.

Look, I have degrees, including a graduate degree. I managed to finish my schooling with zero student debt. Did I attend university when it was cheaper? Kinda. I completed my MA in 2003, and just tuition was $25k a year at my chosen institution. It is now $35k. I have no sympathy for anyone who spends $100k a year for useless degrees. I have little sympathy for anyone who spends that much on a useful degree for that matter.

The problem is not that Tlaib is dumb, she – unlike most of her squad mates – is reasonably intelligent. It’s that the dumbasses that follow her are dumb and believe the shite she’s spewing.

Y’all remember Hannah Dugan right? She’s the Milwaukee county judge that helped an illegal leave the courthouse by a back door despite knowing ICE was there to scoop him up. Well, she got some bad news. Her claims of judicial immunity just went up in smoke. A federal magistrate just denied her motion to dismiss.

Dugan faces 8 years in federal prison if convicted.
