Random News and Notes 22 October

The Louvre in Paris has reopened 3 days after thieves stole some $100 million worth of jewels from the institution. The whole situation is bizarre. Among other things – like the thieves disappearing into the 1st arrondissement on the right bank of the Seine without a trace – it seems the current investigatory theory is that it was an inside job.

Then there is the security director for the Museum. Dominique Buffin is the first woman in the position. She was hired by Laurence des Cars, the first female director of the Louvre. des Cars is on the left in the post below.

Buffin seems to have been a diversity hire. It is being reported that Buffin was hired as part of a feminization process at the government owned museum. God help her if that is true. The frogs are a lot of things, good and bad, but they sure as fuck do not like to have their national identity messed with. The theft of the Crown Jewels does just that.

In an update to a piece I brought you back in September, George Abaraonye, the President-elect of the Oxford Union was ousted via a no-confidence vote yesterday. Some 70% of the voting membership gave him the thumbs-down and ended his reign before it began.

The vote was marred by an intimidation campaign from Abaraonye supporters designed to disrupt the voting process. The vote was suspended briefly on Monday because of the threats.

In some firearms related news, it looks like Glock has caved to anti-gunner pressure regarding the so-called switches. The Austrian company announced a redesign of their blocky, unattractive pistols that will supposedly prevent them from being modified with switches. They are discontinuing most of their most popular models. The only ones that seem to be untouched are the “slimline” G42/43/43x/48 pistols.

For those who are not Glock fanbois, a little explanation is in order. Glock model numbers are the patent number. A G40 is not a 40 caliber Glock, it is the 40th Glock patent and is a long slide 10mm. Additionally, there are double stack Glocks, those are the ones being discontinued, and single stack – or slimline – that are seemingly not being discontinued. Then there is the generation issue. Each incremental step – and some were as minor as a change to the grip texture – became a new generation. It wasn’t until gen 4 that there were serious changes, namely a new recoil spring assembly.

While nobody has actually been hands on with the new V series, it is my understanding that the internals have all changed. None of the current aftermarket parts will fit the new guns. I am also hearing rumor that the slides cannot be milled for optics. I am not a Glock fan, but the decline of any of the major gun manufacturers concerns me, especially when it is self-inflicted.

If you’re in the market for a Glock, get it now before the supply dries up and prices skyrocket.

(Full disclosure: MY EDC is a Glock 43x MOS.)

Oregon Senator Jeff Merkely is a whiny queen. He took to the Senate floor last night and started whinging about Trump. That whine-fest was still going on last I checked.

Other than tiring himself out, I do not see what this stunt was supposed to accomplish.

In other legislative news, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson will not swear in Arizona Rep Adelita Grivalja until the shutdown is over. It has been 28 days since she won a special election to fill the seat previously held by her deceased father. Before you get the wrong idea, I do not think she should be sworn in until the shutdown is over.

The latest twist is the AZ attorney general has decided to file suit to force Johnson to swear her in. While I am not a lawyer, I am reasonably sure that AG Mayes does not have standing to sue the Speaker over internal House things.
