Random News and Notes 23 October

Today is a sad anniversary. It marks the 42nd year since the goat f*ckers err Lebanese Islamic Jihad blew up the Marine Barracks at the Beirut International Airport. I wrote an in-depth piece about it for the 40th anniversary two years ago. You can read it at the page linked below.

I am not sure what to make about this one. SecWar Hegseth has nominated a new person to fill the position of the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army. That position is currently held by General James Mingus. He was appointed to the role in 2024 and the usual term is 3 years. The nominee is LTG Christopher LaNeve, who is currently Hegseth’s senior military aide.

From what I know of Mingus, he is the warfighter that SecWar likes. He was the commander of the 82nd’s long range surveillance and reconnaissance company, the commander of the Ranger special troops battalion and held several other SOCOM billets in his career as well as being the 82nd Airborne division commander. He served several combat tours in his career. He was recently passed over for CENTCOM commander. If there is anything bad to note about Mingus it is the fact that he was a Milley mentee. I use that term instead of protege, because there is a vast difference between the two in FOGO circles.

As an aside, while he was commanding 4th BCT 4th ID in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, the commander of his personal security detail, Florent Groberg saved him, his staff and several high ranking Afghans from a suicide bomber. Groberg was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day.

As far as LeNeve goes, I don’t know anything at all about him. As I said, he is currently the Senior Military aide to SecWar Hegseth.

President Trump announced new sanctions on the Russian oil and gas industry. The two largest Russian oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil and their subsidiaries have been named.

These sanctions come as Trump cancelled a meeting with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin over Putin’s intransigence in negotiating a ceasefire. The meeting was supposed to take place in Budapest.

The Irish Taoiseach – Prime Minister for those not being blessed with the Irish – issued a statement about a violent protest that happened in Dublin the other day. Michael Martin is a member of Fianna Fail a centrist Irish political party.

What caused the unrest you may well ask, as it is not referenced anywhere in the statement. Well, some African illegal alien/asylum seeker raped a 10 year old girl. It gets worse. The subhuman in question had an active, 7 month old deportation order.

I watched some of the video from the protests and I have to say the Irish people have had enough. At one point, after battling with the Gardai, they started stopping cars looking for non-Irish.

When does it end?

There is apparently some sort of gambling scandal rocking the NBA. Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trailblazers head coach Chauncey Billups and former player and coach Damon Jones were arrested in separate FBI raids this morning.

The NBA could cease to exist tomorrow and it wouldn’t affect this editor one bit, but gambling scandals in a major sports league needs a few pixels spilled about it.
