It’s FriYAY! Time for some shenanigans and faffery
Just a quick reminder, tomorrow is Valentine’s day. Or more properly, St. Valentine’s day. You see, a Roman Emperor – Claudius II – executed at least two men named Valentine on the 14th of February in separate but believed to be consecutive years. These men were executed for being Christians and thus became martyrs and eventually Saints.
Like many other Christian holidays, St. Valentine’s day celebrations and traditions have a basis in ancient pagan ritual. In St. Valentine’s day’s case it is the Roman celebration of spring and fertility Lupercalia. That festival was – like most Roman to-dos – a debauched, bloody affair. Animal sacrifices were made, women were whipped through the streets to encourage fertility and much wine was drunk.
