On this date in 1777, a 19-year-old French aristocrat, Marie-Joseph Paul Roch Yves Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, arrives in South Carolina with the intent to serve as General George Washington’s second-in-command. Despite his young years, Lafayette would ably serve as a general in the Continental Army, fighting at Brandywine, Barren Hill, Monmouth and Rhode Island. He would return to France in 1779 to press Continental interests with the King. He returned to the Colonies in time to participate in the Virginia campaign and the Siege of Yorktown.
On this date in 1966, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down its decision in Miranda v. Arizona, establishing the principle that all criminal suspects must be advised of their rights before interrogation.

A quartet of Gaza protesters were sentenced to prison in the UK.
