On this date in:
- 1096 – The First Crusade, led by Peter the Hermit, reaches Sofia. The Byzantine rulers provided the crusaders, mostly peasants and serfs, with food and other supplies after news of the sacking and burning of Belgrade two weeks prior.
- 1691 – English forces under William III soundly defeat the Jacobite forces and their Irish allies at Aughrim, Co. Galway. It was the bloodiest battle ever fought on Irish soil with some 7000 dead.
- 1794 – Then captain Horatio Nelson loses his right eye at the siege of Calvi in Corsica. His lack of an eye would play a pivotal role later in his career at the Battle of Copenhagen.
- 1861 – The Confederacy signs a treaty with the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations. By signing these treaties, the tribal nations severed their relationships with the federal government, much in the way the southern states did by seceding from the Union.
- 1861 – Wild Bill Hickok killed his first man, David McCanles, in a gin fight at Rock Creek Station in Nebraska. Hickok would work both sides of the fence until his assassination by Jack McCall.McCall shot Hickok in the back of the head from point-blank range on August 2, 1876, while Hickok was playing poker at Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon in Deadwood, Dakota Territory.
- 1862 – President Abraham Lincoln signs into law a measure calling for the awarding of a U.S. Army Medal of Honor, in the name of Congress, “to such noncommissioned officers and privates as shall most distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action, and other soldier-like qualities during the present insurrection.”
- 1941- The Nazis bomb Moscow for the first time. The lack of strategic bombers kept the German bombing a nuisance to the Soviets.
- 1943 – The Soviets turn back the Wehrmacht in the Battle of Kursk. On this date, 900 Russian tanks clashed with 900 German (including their superior Tiger tanks) at Prokhorovka—the Battle of Kursk’s most serious engagement. By the end of the Battle more than 6000 armored vehicles had been committed making Kursk the largest tank battle in history.
- 1957 – Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes the first president to ride in the newest advance in aviation technology: the helicopter.
- 1974 – G. Gordon Liddy, John Ehrlichman and two others are convicted of conspiracy and perjury in connection with the Watergate scandal.
We start the news with an obituary. South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has passed. Graham, 71, had a medical emergency at his residence in DC. Medics were called but they were unable to revive the 4 term Senator.
Graham had just returned from a trip to Ukraine.
You may not have been a fan of the man – this editor was not – but you cannot deny that he worked hard to advance conservative causes.
Indiana Lt. Governor Micah Beckwith says we need to ban mosques from broadcasting the Muslim call to prayer over loudspeakers five times a day.
Most municipalities in this area already have restrictions on church bells, restricting the Adhan shouldn’t be an issue.
ICE has work permits for Haitians until July 24 and those from Ethiopia, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan, and Myanmar until July 17, in a bid to ease the shock of employers losing so many employees. This move follows a Supreme Court ruling that allows ending TPS for these nations.
About 345,000 people are affected, mostly Haitians, many working in construction, hospitality, and healthcare.
Those of us who served know that we are taught to improvise, adapt and overcome. Well these Russian troops got the first, but failed the next two. The video shows two soldiers on a military truck during a training exercise. One mans a YakB-12.7 rotary cannon, adapted from Soviet-era helicopters for ground use against Ukrainian drones, but its torque causes it to whip around uncontrollably due to a makeshift mount.
