    There was an angel at Bastogne, Renee Bernadette Lemaire, she wanted a parachute to fashion a wedding dress, instead it became her burial shroud.

    This girl, a registered nurse in the country of Belgium, volunteered her services at the aid station, 20th Armored Infantry Battalion in Bastogne, Belgium, 21 December, 1944. At this time the station was holding about 150 patients since the city was encircled by enemy forces and evacuation was impossible. Many of these patients were seriously injured and in great need of immediate nursing attention. This girl cheerfully accepted the herculean task and worked without adequate rest or food until the night of her untimely death on 24 December, 1944. She changed dressings, fed patients unable to feed themselves, gave out medications, bathed and made the patients more comfortable, and was of great assistance in the administration of plasma and other professional duties. Her very presence among those wounded men seemed to be an inspiration to those whose morale had declined from prolonged suffering. On the night of December 24 the building in which Renee Lemaire was working was scored with a direct hit by an enemy bomber. She, together with those whom she was caring for so diligently, were instantly killed.

    It is on these grounds that I recommend the highest award possible to one, who though not a member of the armed forces of the United States, was of invaluable assistance to us.

    CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Mich,. – – A house fire in Chippewa county has left a family of 6, including a newborn baby, with no home.

    Fire crews responded to the house on Johnson Road in Rudyard Wednesday afternoon.

    The community is now stepping up to help with the aftermath.

    On Christmas morning, the roads just outside of Rudyard were empty.

    That afternoon, firemen poured in to extinguish the house fire.

    An effort which a neighbor says ran into the early morning after the fire was re-ignited.

    The community is working quickly to meet their basic needs, especially for the kids.

    The eldest is 5 years old, the youngest born just a month ago

    Just getting them the socks, underwear, some basic t-shirts, pants, and we’re going to move forward from there. Once we get a feel as to which direction we’re going. They will need housing, so that’s all taking place, as well. Once they get into housing, they will need furniture. Everything was lost in the fire, so everything they had, even the Christmas presents for their children, are all gone.

    Any idea what’s it been like trying to GIVE away a solid oak dining room table from what era, only God knows, with 2 leafs and chairs. Had a custom cut tempered glass cut for the top so I wouldn’t ruin it while doing what needed to be done, when no one has large families anymore.     A Virginia man was killed by a black bear that fell from a tree after being shot by the man’s hunting partner.

    Lester C. Harvey, 58, of Phenix, Virginia, was hunting in Lunenburg County, which is between Richmond and Danville when the incident occurred. A group of hunters were following the bear when it ran up the tree. As the group retreated from the tree, one of them shot the bear. The animal fell onto Harvey who was standing about 10 feet from the bottom of the tree.

    A member of the group rendered first aid before Harvey was rushed to two different hospitals. He died from his injuries Friday, Virginia’s Department of Wildlife Resources said in a statement.

    Your editor is an avid bear hunter. He’s seen wounded bears do some amazing things. But this is a first.

    It didn’t take long for the Japanese army to subject Chinese civilians to their cruel experiments. As Japan occupied large swaths of China in the early 1930s, the army settled in Harbin near Manchuria — evicting eight villages there — and built the infamous Harbin facility.
