    Mia Love

Mia Love never had it easy. Yet in an age where cynicism about the United States and its founding had become the norm, she never lost sight of the great opportunities America had given her.

In 2022, Love was diagnosed with brain cancer. Two weeks ago, she announced in a moving Deseret News essay that she would soon die, and used this final opportunity to write a love letter to America. We wanted to have her on “Honestly,” but this past weekend, her family announced that she had passed away at age 49.

You can read all about her life in this beautiful obituary published by Deseret News, a Utah publication we admire. We are grateful to them for allowing us to reprint this lightly edited piece and help it find the widest possible audience. — BW

My dear friends, fellow Americans, and Utahns, I am taking up my pen, not to say goodbye but to say thank you and express my living wish for you and the America I know.

My battle with brain cancer is coming to an end. The disease is no longer responding to treatment, and my family and I have shifted our focus from treatments to enjoying every moment and making memories with the time we have.

My life has been extended by exceptional medical care, science, and extraordinary professionals who have become dear friends. My extra season of life has also been the result of the faith and prayers of countless friends, known and unknown. The result of such humble faith and pleading prayers have been felt by me and my family in ways too numerous to count. I have always believed that faith and science are inextricably interconnected.

As a mayor, member of congress, and media commentator, I have seen the worst of petty politics, divisive rhetoric, and disappointing lapses of moral character by some. These same roles also provided me a front-row seat and backstage pass to be blessed and inspired by the courage, vision, and hope of America’s finest daughters, sons, and citizens.

Couching this column as a “dying wish” felt a little dramatic, even for a drama person like me. We are not certain how long this season of my battle will be, and I do want to share, and reshare, some things with the world that I passionately believe. I write all of this as my “living wish” and hopefully “enduring wish” for you.

Let me tell you about the America I know. My parents immigrated to the United States with $10 in their pocket and a belief that the America they had heard about really did exist as the land of opportunity. Through hard work and great sacrifice they achieved success—so the America I came to know growing up was filled with all the excitement found in living the American dream. I was taught to love this country, warts and all, and understand I had a role to play in our nation’s future. I learned to passionately believe in the possibilities and promise of America.

Watching my father and mother work odd jobs in order to provide for us and maintain their independence taught me valuable lessons in personal responsibility. When tough times came, they didn’t look to Washington, they looked within. Because the America they knew was centered in self-reliance, the America I know is founded in the freedom self-reliance always brings.

What makes America great is the idea that when government is limited and decisions are made closest to the people they impact, people are free—free to work, free to live, free to choose, free to fail, and free to achieve. The America I know provides everyone an equal opportunity to be as unequaled as they choose to be.

The America I know gives back. Americans, regardless of financial status, are the most giving people on the planet. On their own, without government requirement, our people give their money, their time, and their attention to causes, communities, and people in need whether it is across the street or around the world. I’ve experienced this generosity throughout my life and during my battle with cancer. I am so grateful.

The America I know makes tough choices. As the mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, facing its own fiscal cliff, we put limited government, fiscal discipline, and personal responsibility first in order to create an amazing community that could last. I have also seen that facing challenging choices head-on inspires our citizens to get involved, engage in meaningful dialogue, rally around shared values, do things differently, and change the way government works.

Regardless of the difficulties we may face individually, in our families, in our communities, and in our nation, the old adage is still true—you can make excuses or you can make progress, but you cannot make both! The America I know doesn’t make excuses.

The America I know is grounded in the gritty determination found in patriots, pioneers, and struggling parents, in small business owners with big ideas, in the farmers who work in the beauty of our landscapes and the artists who paint them, in our heroic military and our inspiring Olympic athletes, and in every child who looks at the seemingly impossible and says, “I can do that.”

The America I know is great—not because government made it great, but because ordinary citizens like me, like my parents, and like you are given the opportunity every day to do extraordinary things. That is the America I know!

What the America I Know Deserves

Some have forgotten the math of America—whenever you divide, you diminish. What I know is that the goodness and compassion of the American people is a multiplier that simply cannot be measured. The goodness and greatness of our country is multiplied when neighbors help neighbors, when we reach out to those in need and build better citizens and more heroic communities.

You see, the America I know is built by citizens and leaders who respect, strengthen, and serve each other, not based on race, gender, or economic status but because we are Americans! We all have a role to play in uniting the country around the principles that have made us extraordinary.

The America I know will continue as long as each of us simply remember that this country is exceptional—because it is! I know it is! I can see on the horizon that our best and brightest days as a nation are still to come.

The America I know deserves leaders who trust the people and will tell them the hard truth about where we are and what we need to do in order to preserve our future. We need leaders who are prepared to engage in a dialogue about realities, priorities, and solving America’s problems.

When I wrote my memoir, Qualified, the working title was By the Content of Your Character. The American principles I wrote about in my book are the principles that shaped and blessed my life. I have always felt that it was character that counts in this country. The America I know, while far from perfect, is the place where we strive every day to live up to the principles Dr. Martin Luther King declared from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. We will be judged in the end, individually and as a nation, by the content of our character.

    Preserving the America We Know

The America I know isn’t just my story, and it isn’t just your story. It is our story. It is a story of endless possibilities, human struggle, standing up and striving for more. Our story has been told for well over 200 years, punctuated by small steps and giant leaps; from a woman on a bus to a man with a dream; from the bravery of the greatest generation to the explorers, entrepreneurs, reformers, and innovators of today. This is our story. This is the America we know—because we built it—together.

As my season of life begins to draw to a close, I still passionately believe that we can revive the American story we know and love. I am convinced that our citizens must remember the principles of our story so that our children, and those seeking freedom around the world, will know where to look to find a place for their story.

We must fight to keep the America we know as that shining city on a hill—truly the last best hope on earth. Like Benjamin Franklin and countless patriots down through the ages, I believe the American experiment is not a setting sun but a rising sun.

I thank each of you, and all of you, for being part of my journey in the American dream. You and I, we the people, will be forever connected in the cause of this country we love.

In the end, I hope that my life will have mattered and made a difference for the nation I love and the family and friends I adore. I hope you will see the America I know in the years ahead, that you will hear my words in the whisper of the wind of freedom and feel my presence in the flame of the enduring principles of liberty.

My living wish and fervent prayer for you and for this nation is that the America I have known is the America you fight to preserve and that each citizen, and every leader, will do their part to ensure that the America we know will be the America our grandchildren and great grandchildren will inherit.

This slider-style mini-burger recipe has a delicious sweet and savory topping. It’s a fun twist on a regular burger. These sliders are so tasty that they earned a place in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Reader’s Best Recipes cookbook.

    Notes:

    • If you can find brioche slider rolls, they’re best. If not, dinner rolls will do.
    • Mayonnaise is optional as we know some readers aren’t fans.
    • You can make the Balsamic Glaze for the sliders that morning or in advance.

    Bacon Topping

    Ingredients:

    6 slices Applewood smoked bacon

    Instructions:

Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil. Preheat grill to medium-high.

Arrange bacon in single layer on baking sheet. Cook in oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until brown and crispy.

    Relish & Mayonnaise

    Ingredients:

    3 tablespoons butter

2 Gala apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced

    1 yellow onion, finely diced

1 teaspoon chili paste or sambal oelek (near hot sauces in most large supermarkets)

    1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

    1 lemon

    1/2 cup mayonnaise

    2 tablespoons thinly sliced scallions

    Instructions

For relish: In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter.
Add apples and onions and cook for 5 to 10 minutes, or until tender. Add chili paste and salt. Remove from heat and cover to keep warm.

For mayonnaise (optional): Remove zest from lemon and set aside. Juice half of lemon. In a bowl, combine zest and lemon juice. Add mayonnaise and scallions and
    stir to combine.

    Sliders

    Ingredients

2 pounds freshly ground beef chuck

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh Italian parsley

    2 teaspoons salt

    1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon Balsamic Glaze (*see below)

    1 tablespoon melted butter

    2 teaspoons dark-brown sugar

    1 teaspoon chili paste

12 slices sharp white cheddar cheese

12 brioche slider rolls or dinner rolls, split in half

1 cup coarsely chopped red leaf lettuce

    Instructions

For sliders: Break beef into clumps by hand and put into a bowl. Add parsley and salt.

In another bowl, whisk together Worcestershire sauce, Balsamic Glaze (*see below), melted butter, brown sugar, and chili paste.

Add to beef and gently mix to combine. Form into 12 patties.

Cook on grill for 3 minutes. Turn over, top each with slice of cheddar, and cook for 3 minutes more. Transfer patties to a plate.

Place rolls split side down on grill for 1 minute, or until lightly toasted.

To assemble: Spread mayonnaise on bottom half of each roll. Arrange lettuce on top. Add patty, cheese side up. Halve each bacon slice. Put one half on each patty. Top with relish and remaining roll halves.

    *How to Make Balsamic Glaze
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup balsamic vinegar with 1/4 cup brown sugar. Allow sugar to melt, then bring to a low boil and cook 2 minutes, or until glaze coats the back of a spoon. Cool, transfer to a jar with a lid, and keep in the refrigerator

    Flashback: Berlusconi & Bunga Bunga

Model Who Exposed Pedophile Ring Found Dead After Tweet Predicting She’d Be Killed

    08-17-2019, 09:15 PM

Imane Fadil, the ex-model who claimed to have witnessed “demonic rituals” at Silvio Berlusconi’s mansion died mysteriously on March 1st at age 34. She was writing a book called “I Saw the Devil”.

Imane Fadil was a Moroccan ex-model who became a celebrity after becoming a key witness in the 2013 “Rubygate” trials which accused the media mogul and ex-Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi of “child prostitution”. Fadil was also looking to be a witness in a related investigation (dubbed “Ruby ter”) that is still ongoing.

In 2018, Fadil claimed in an interview that Berlusconi’s infamous “parties” lead to dark, satanic rituals. She was also in the process of writing a tell-all book about Rubygate and the dark secrets of Berlusconi. The name of the projected book was quite evocative: I Met the Devil.

However, in the past weeks, things dramatic turn. Imane Fadil died in a hospital room in Milan on March 1st after a month of agony. Media sources reported her death only 15 days after the fact, mostly because authorities announced the opening of a homicide investigation. Indeed, the cause of Fadil’s death is currently believed to be “murder by radioactive poisoning”.

Here’s a look at the bizarre story.

    Rubygate

The Ex-Model Who Claimed Silvio Berlusconi Hosted Satanic Rituals in His House Died From “Apparent Poisoning”
Karima El Mahroug aka Ruby Rubacuori.

In 2013, Berlusconi was found guilty of paying for the sexual services of dancer Ruby Rubacuori when she was a minor. He was also charged with abusing his political powers in an attempt to cover up the relationship.

17-year old Moroccan belly dancer and alleged prostitute Karima El Mahroug (better known as “Ruby Rubacuori”) claimed to have been given $10,000 by Berlusconi at parties at his private villas. The girl told prosecutors in Milan that these events were like orgies where Berlusconi and 20 young women performed an African-style ritual known as the “bunga bunga” in the nude.
    – Daily Beast, Berlusconi’s “Bunga Bunga Orgies”

The Ex-Model Who Claimed Silvio Berlusconi Hosted Satanic Rituals in His House Died From “Apparent Poisoning”
Arcore, Berlusconi’s private villa, where the parties took place.

In 2014, Berlusconi filed an appeal and managed to get the convictions against him overturned. However, the “Ruby ter” investigation is still ongoing which alleges that Berlusconi bribed 18 girls that participated in his parties to “speak positively” about Berlusconi. A month prior to her hospitalization, Fadil had requested to be a witness in this trial.

    Infamous Interview

Fadil’s last interview, given to the Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano on April 2018, addressed topics that were not discussed in court: Satanic rituals taking place in hidden rooms inside Berlusconi’s mansion. Here’s a rough translation of this infamous interview.

Imane Fadil, a model of Moroccan origin, was just over 25 years old when she was invited for the first time to Arcore, the home of Berlusconi, in 2011. She participated in eight “elegant dinners” and during some of these, according to her, she saw everything: The girls, the stripteases, and the “Bunga Bunga” parties. She then stopped attending and went to the public prosecutor’s office to reveal everything she had seen, complete with names and surnames. The result? Photographers, interviews, headlines, lawsuits. Today, Imane is 33 years old and she is about to finish a book that will reveal everything you need to know about Berlusconi.

Today, after a few years, how do you remember that whole affair?
It was a devastating thing, impossible to describe. At first I was alone against everyone, nobody believed my version.

    What did everyone think?
That I was telling those things because I wanted money and success.

    And how was it?
I used to go to Arcore because I hoped it would be enough to get into that circle and get a job (in television). Then, I understood what was truly happening and I spoke up.

Were you defamed at that time?
Yes, by all. The first was Emilio Fede. But then I sued him and they condemned him, now there’s the appeal. He also sued me, but his case was dismissed because I said the truth and he didn’t.

    Your ugliest memory?
The last night I went there, there were all these naked girls dancing. One of them was laying on the ground and was wearing only a loincloth and she was shaking desperately, staring at me. Her eyes seemed to say: “Don’t judge me, help me!”. A terrifying memory.

Have you ever witnessed explicit scenes?
    No, I did not.

And who told you this happened?
Well, the last night a girl came to me and told me: “Look, to get something you have to do something more.” And I understood everything. Until that moment I had hoped I would never be asked for such a thing.

Now you are writing a book. Why?
Because I want to tell everything. This is not limited to a powerful man who had girls. There is much more to this story, much more serious things.

    Explain.
It’s not easy to tell, it will be the first time I do it. But the time has come.

    Please go ahead.
This gentleman is part of a sect that invokes the devil. Yes, I know I’m saying something strong, but it is true. And many others know this.

    They know what?
That continuous obscenities happened in that house. A sort of sect, made up of only women, dozens and dozens of complicit females.

    Did you see these rituals?
Let’s say I have many clues. In that room where Bunga Bunga was held there was a small room with clothes, all the same, like tunics, about twenty or thirty. What were they for? And then there was another small underground room with a swimming pool, with another room next to it, totally dark, without any light. An underground pool and a room without lights? Why?

Weak clues. It could be a relaxation area. Is it a fact that you have not seen any actual Satanic rituals or anything like that?
Look, I’ve seen worse. Things that are difficult to explain briefly.

    Please try.
I saw strange, sinister presences. I’ve been a psychic since I was a child due to my father being was sanctified. And I tell you that, in that house, there are disturbing presences. There’s evil in there, I’ve seen it, there’s Lucifer.

Do you know that saying such things could be perceived as crazy?
Of course I know, but I don’t care what people will say. I never said anything because I had no evidence. Now I have it.

Do you have proof? Please show it.
No, not yet, I’ll do it later. I just have to finish this book. And then the world will know.
    – Il Fatto Quotidiano, Imane Fadil: “Le notti di Bunga Bunga a casa di Berlusconi. Ad Arcore una setta di Satana con tuniche e riti”

    “I Met the Devil”

At the time of her death, Fadil was looking for a publisher that was “courageous enough” to print her book entitled I Met the Devil. Immediately after her death, the draft of the book was seized by prosecutors. The Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano published a small excerpt of the book that was shared by Fadil in 2018. Here’s a rough translation.

She saw the girls in a sort of circle, with Berlusconi at the center as a pivot: A kind of adoration, with some nude, others half-naked, and others disguised, wandering through the underground living room. It was then that Imane found courage and went to Berlusconi to tell him that she wanted to go home. But Silvio told her to wait. In the basement, Imane saw what she called a sort of brothel with naked girls and half-naked in the pool. There were also minors who perhaps did not realize what was happening.

“The virgin maiden arrived”, Imane repeated with horror. They were announcing the very young “selection” for that evening.
    – Il Fatto Quotidiano, Imane Fadil, il suo libro mai pubblicato: “Io, in quel bordello sotterraneo”

    Strange Circumstances Surrounding Her Death

Fadil died on March 1st after a long period of agony as her vital functions progressively shut down. She experienced her first symptoms on January 29th. She was then hospitalized for nearly a month where she underwent a long series of tests as doctors were looking for the cause of her pain. During this time, Fadil told her brother and lawyer that she feared she had been poisoned.

After her death, it was revealed that she was probably poisoned by a “very strange” ****tail of radioactive elements that caused the progressive deterioration of her internal organs. These elements are not freely available to the general public.

On the day of her death, the Judicial Authority seized Fadil’s body and the entirety of her medical records.

When news broke about Fadil’s death, Berlusconi commented: “It is always sad when a young person dies. However, I never met her this person.”

Berlusconi said to pay off ‘bunga bunga’ witnesses

    November 29, 2013

Citing testimony and telephone wiretaps, the Milan court said Berlusconi convened about a dozen of these young women to come to his Milan mansion on Jan. 15, 2011 to meet with his lawyers. They were summoned after the women’s homes were searched as part of the police investigation into the parties.

From then on, the judges wrote, the women began receiving 2,500 euros ($3,400) apiece each month from Berlusconi and subsequently they offered nearly identical testimony in court denying that the dinner parties had sexual overtones. The amount is about twice what an average worker in Italy earns a month.

“All the people who received this amount of money gave declarations at trial that were perfectly overlapping, even in the use of language that was incongruent with their cultural background,” the judges wrote. “In particular, there was a repetition of names, terms and phrases that the witnesses, when asked, said they didn’t know the meaning of the word or phrase that they had used.”

“These were declarations that were directed in favor of Berlusconi,” the judges wrote.
